Hi im new here this page is great lots of info lots of help and i do need help. I want to put manual disc brakes on the front of my 73 maverick it now has drums on it can i buy 74 too 77 disc caliper and rotors for a bolt on fit or will it not bolt on. thanks.
you would also need the spindles. If you fin one in the junkyard you would just want to knock off the spindle from the ball joints and tie rod and take the whole thing. You should probably grab the steel brake lines that run down the frame too.
what about the master cylinder, which one would you use. If you run 4 wheel disk brakes would you not need a different m/c. I put 4 wheel disk branks on my 70 maverick, but I need to know what m/c too use? Thanks George
i have seen some people fab up a master cylinder from a 70's/80's model Corvette with 4 wheel disc. seems to work fine for them...
I'm using the stock drum master cylinder on my 73 that I put disc's on with no problems. You could look into the Geo Metro conversion.
but will the drum m/c send enough pressure to the front? because i believe that the disc brakes should require more pressure to operate efficiently, over drum brakes. this is just what i have always understood it to be...
i did the same,only mine are four piston calipers. no problems here.i did have to change one end on my stock brakeline.
The pressure is fine, but you need the larger reservoir for the fluid displacement associated with disc brake calipers...
Discs do not use a residual pressure valve, except in cars (like old street rods) that have the master cylinder mounted lower than the calipers/wheel cylinders. Also; I "don't think" (I don't know for sure though) the Maverick/Comet drum brake master cylinder has residual pressure valves either...
This is correct. You will need a 74 or later Master with the large and small chambers. The early ones have both chambers the same size and you run the risk of running out of fluid and pushing air into the disc calipers, not good!
