The guy that I got my mav from welded the spiders in the rear and on my way home the rearend locked up and now i just need to know how to tell which rearend I have. Its a 71 and all I can tell frome lookin under the car is that it is a front load rear or (pumpkin). And another question is what is a good street gear to run with a 302 5 speed combination.

    Q 1.
That should be an 8" in there, but being as there is a 5 speed in it, they may have changed rears too.
If you can get a socket on all the bolts that attatch the center section to the housing, it's an 8". If you cant get at the ones one the bottom, it's a 9"
    Q 2.
With a five speed, you can get away with a pretty steep gear ratio. I'd look for a 3.73 or thereabouts, but probably wouldn't go any higher than 4.11.
What kind of use and expectations do you have in mind for this car?

I want to be able to drive it on a daily basis, but I want something better than the stock gears I got now. 373's are what I had in my ford truck but if its an 8 I can't find a set in summit or jegs. eventually I want to make this a pretty mean street rod and take on all those camaros and firebirds around where i live.

    gears.

I'm sure summit has more than they list available.
You might try giving them a call.
If not try Currie enterprises or Randys ring and pinion.
    Good luck!
