ok guys so my buddy is trying to sell his 1974 comet gt and im trying to decide if i should buy it is has a 302 and C4 it has buckets and floor shift 98% rust free except for sriver side quarter panel just along the body but the car came from texas so other then that its good, also the same quarter has a dent on it. the windsheild is cracked also.he blew the trans and its just been sitting since.the ignition is also pulled, looks like someone tried to steal it : /
That car was on ebay....or on here.....for sale awhile back. My guess is that everywhere there is black paint at the bottom of the car....there is bondo/rust. The driver's side quarter looks pretty scary knowing where else Mavericks/Comets rust out at. How much does your Buddy think it is worth?
Looks like a lot of good parts. Would make a good project. But that's what it is, a project. Got more than 2% rust I'm sure. Hoses going in to firewall are cut off. That's a sign of stuff not working. If iy was on Ebay and didn't sell, I'm guessing he thinks it's worth more than it really is. Without seeing the interior and other areas I would think $2000 or less. JMO.
Well he probably wants more than its worth. Cut off heater hose could mean a leaky heater core, he will say no but think the worst. body work needed and how is the drive train and brakes, exhaust, and interior. Offer less than $1000.00 and work up. JMO
That is the first thing I noticed. I dont think it would stick out as much if the shock tower braces were still on the car. Of course that leads me to wonder if the engine has been rebuilt or not.
ya i could probably get it for about 1500 but there is no heater that cars radio doesnt work it needs new carpet and the seats recovered some one put true duals on it cammed it and put air shocks in the back
After reading what all is wrong with this car, you still have a whole lot more to start with than a lot of us did. It looks like a good strong basis to become a very nice Comet when finished. I would definitely get those tower braces back on before the towers sag inboard. to our world.
The busted column is not the only issue I see in this pic. I see a wet floor, which could possibly mean a rusty cowl. It also looks to be in severe need of new rear leaf springs, which isn't really a big deal, but just another thing on the list. $1500 tops IMO.
ya the carpet was wet in that [icture because i had wet feet when i got in it. but really the only rust i have found is in that quarter i have been under that car a million times workin on the trans and just lookin, its rust free under body and cowl the car still has an origanl D-5 stamp what ever that stands for. it runs real good and the brakes are good but not power, the dash pad is cracked, the tower braces are there just in the truck, truck is also solid. i mean it really does not have that much rust.
Maybe because it has been covered with bondo?? Always be suspicious of repaints/touch-ups/re-do's, etc. Never know what is hiding. For there to be THAT much rust in the quarter.....I suspect there HAS to be rust in other areas. But.....maybe not. Maybe just a frreak thing that it rusted out in just one quarter.
I'd check the rear frame rails, where the shackle mounts, the torques boxes, the tops of the shock towers, under the battery. Run a hose in the cowl vents, and see where the water goes. How about the leading edge of that top? any rust under it? Heater core isn't a big deal, just alot of work to replace. Is it a disc brake car? (looks like it from the MC)
agree....that and the rear fender area; this plus above listed is the most difficult to repair. Fenders and doors are easy anybody should be able to "repair" them.
Either way, I doubt it's a common car (I'd love to see a Marti Report on it), from a restoration standpoint, it would be a neat car to restore. I wonder if it came with the white top?
