Does anyone know where to find the package tray for a two door with the factory style multiple holes drilled out for speakers? See the photo borrowed from Craig, below. I bought one about 12 years ago for my 73, but for the life of me, I do not remember where it was from (maybe eBay), nor can I find the same one again. I want to install a modern stereo in my 70, so I am looking for another tray in the same style. I have seen the ones with the entire 6x9 cut out, but I do not want aftermarket speaker grills above my package tray. I like the more stealth look.

I see that Autokrafters has one that looks similar to what I bought before(http://autokrafters.com/Ford-Maverick-1972_p-10656-package-tray-black-mesh-wspeakers.aspx), but it states it is covered with mesh, which I don't necessarily want. Does anyone have experience with this one, or know of sources other tha Autokrafters for package trays with the multiple speaker holes?

    Thanks!
    -Corbin

I drilled holes in a pattern like that using a new piece of masonite which is stronger than the original material. I to like the stealth look afterwards I covered it with a thin piece of automotive black carpet. Totally invisible.

    Corbin,

I came up with a different way to hide the speakers ... mount them under the deck, and cover the entire package tray in speaker cloth.

Here is a link to a tech article ....http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?p=702752#post702752

The only thing I would do different is to make more of a grid of openings over the speakers. The original material that I used years ago was stiffer, and the newer speaker cloth, being more flexible, shows the openings. Another idea is to glue window screen between the package tray and the cloth for more support.

Something odd that you may encounter is that Ford made the speaker openings a little small ... like 6x8 instead of 6x9. I think this may apply to pre-1973 cars. A 6x9 can be fit under the opening, but bolt holes need to be redrilled. I may have used the existing holes on one side and two large sheetmetal screws and lock washers on the other.

Cars with am/fm stereo came with that, I bought a reproduction one for my car, the company that made them, use to be on EBay , Craig also sold their stuff, I can't think of the name...

The one from AK looks decent, pardon all the dust in my pic, it was still under construction.....

My 74 came with metal speaker covers. 6x9"s fit perfect without any modifications.

I custom ordered that rear package tray for myself. I have it in two of my cars. It is made from a thin cardboard rear package tray....not the thicker package trays that are normally offered.

My 73 mounted "below deck" 6*9's no mods needed. They are not hidden but have nice full black grills.

Thanks, Dave. Now that I think of it, a 76 Comet I parted out had the same package tray (trashed) and it had the am/fm stereo setup.

Those look pretty nice. Do you know if they are factory or dealer/aftermarket installed pieces?

Thanks Craig. I am pretty sure the one I put in my 73 was the stock style fiberboard..

If you don't mind me asking, where did you order yours?
