I am getting ready to repaint my unrestored 74 Grabber and have been debating removing the vinyl top. It was recently replaced by the previous owner and someone did a very nice job. The chrome is also perfect. I think the car would look better without it, but It looks like a lot of work to get it off and strip all the glue etc. It also looks as if it wraps under the front and rear window molding. Opinions?
Vinyl Top This style is sometimes referred to as a "bikini top " had one on my 75 Comet, looked great and I left it alone .. someone paid $$ originally to have that top put there .. Its not a freebie. I think it adds some class to the car. Nice car by the way. Just mho . Cometized
I would leave it.. Looks rather smooth though. I can't see any grain in the texture if any.. THAT might make me consider removing it..
Its whatever you like but since you asked for opinions I would remove the top myself unless you are going for the bone stock look.
Its not hard vinyl like the roofs I remember in the 70's. It is textured soft vinyl with some sort of padding on the back. I'm concerned that the UV will crack it and it will leak eventually.
Halo top. One of my favorite factory vinyl tops. That car is soooo nice. Kind of a shame to have to change so much to get what you want.
That's the point. The more I think about it, the more $$ I can save by changing the car only modestly.
White cars look good, just change the shade of white. Ford liked their milky whites..what's the paint code on your car?
I've just restored my Comet GT with a vinyl top. It took some getting used to, but now I really like it. It helps make it stand out. I do believe, though, that a black on black on black car does not make the vinyl top stand out as much and makes the chrome shine even the more??
That top does look nice. I had to warm up to the one on my car, but once I got used to it, I couldn't picture it without it. I wish mine had survived that hail storm, since it didn't I may not put it back. If mine looked that good, I would be leaving it on.
I'm on the same exact page as this guy! In fact.. I almost bought the Halo trim to convert my rare solid red vinyl top to the Halo style because it doesn't have the trim down low that interrupts the fastback body lines that the full top does. Also tough to see the Halo top from a lower and distant side angle too. Let me know if you decide to delete it as I may still be interested in all the trim pieces.
Top I agree it would look nicer without the vinyl top but its new and looks nice. Vinyl tops were very common in the 70's I would leave it on there. If you do decide to remove it I'm told those moldings are rare especially in good shape.
what are your plans with the paint? if youre going to original paint colors of white and what looks like an olive or close green I would either remove the top or replace it with a similar green top since I sold a set of vinyl top trim pieces Ive been romanticizing about having a vinyl top on my comet gt and my neighbor said he would make me one and install it for $200 so Im tempted
