Hey guys been away awhile, new house and farm and other projects have side tracked me off my maverick and I'm itching to get back into her. Last time I was working on her she had a overheating problem with the 289 I was trying to get running before my dad needed it to stick in his mustang ( still about 2 years away from needing a motor) it sat for 20 years and I've found out rust build up in the block is plugging my radiator still going to work it out and try to get it running cooler. But I picked up a 302 40 over for 40 bucks. Number 1 cyl has a hole in the piston but all cyl walls look great the whole block looks fresh like it wasn't run for long before whatever happened happened. What do yall think a machine shop will charge me to replace the 1 piston and double check the block maybe new rings and bearings just to be sure. Thanks guys also searching for a t-5 to make a swap in soon.....
depending on what piston and ring package are required to patch it up.. around $300-500 bucks. Could be slightly more if you want premium gaskets and positive type seals on at least the intake valve guides.
Cool deal that's not bad ill be putting all the gaskets and heads on just need them to check it all out throw a new piston in and rings should be good to go. Just want to built a mild motor 300hp or so nothing huge
If you're already doing most of the work anyways?.. and you say the bores are still new looking?.. you may as well just do it ALL yourself. My father in law was a mechanic for more than 70 years and always teased me about using "fancy" ring expanders and installation sleeves by showing me his long dirty finger nails.
yea the cyl walls look new still have fresh looking cross hatching, i haven't pulled the crank to look at the bearings. I have replaced everything on a motor but the camshaft and pistons, I guess I will have to do it for the 1st time sooner or later but with this hole in the piston just not too sure why it happened or if it did more damage than I can see you know?
