Hello, I'v'e got a 74 Merc Comet with a late model 302, I'm swapping out the C4 with a Toploader overdrive 4 speed. For the most part all fits good but I need to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter, unfortunatly about a 1/3 of the brace for the trans mount thats spot welded to floor is where I need to cut. I'm considering re-working the brace on either side of the shifter, I also plan on using sub-frame connectors. Any thoughts? Thanks
Unfortunately, I dont believe there are any aftermarket shifters for that transmission so I'm guessing your using the shifter that came on it. It mut be a pretty big shifter cause my Hurst shifted toploader fits fine. About the only option would be to modify a different shifter. I think I would do that before cutting that brace. Or modify the one you got.
I'm using a hurst shifter made for this trans. I think that the trans is more the problem. Along with the fact it's from a truck and the shifter is designed for use in a truck. I haven't looked at fabbing another mounting bracket yet, problem is that if I do that, the shifter arms will be too short, not sure about side clearance either. Mavaholic, you mentioned having a set of subframe connectors? I'm looking for a set of scare tubing ones, eventualyy I'like to brace them in the center similar to whats done on the Mustang GT500E clones.
I have a set of the Dan Starns connectors that I picked up, for what I thought was a friend. 7 months later, I still have them. If interested, email me at Mavaholic@aol.com
hello my mav had a c4 and i change it for the same you have my shifter is a hurst but i had to make a large piece about 5" and cuted the shifter stick put this piece and the shifter dont hit with anything the proble is i have to move the shifter a larger distance to make changes im from mexico and my english is not good i hope you understan my explanation about your problem.
Mendoza, Hi, I understood you fairly well. You're right with what you need to do. Make sure this will clear your fuel and brake lines. The problem with moving the shifter back is you'll have to extend the shifter rods, probably with high strength bolts and couplers. You'll also have to pound out the floor to make enough clearance for the shifter rods. Are you in the US or Mexico? Are you familiar with the Shelby Mavericks made in Mexico? Just wondering. I've decided to use a differen't trans instead of doing the above stuff. I'm using a Toploader SROD (single rail over drive) instead. Aluminum case, internally shifted similar to a 5 speed but the shifter is slightly off to the drvers side and the shifter has 3 or 4 shift locations. If you decide to use one be aware that there are two types of these tranny's. One is out of cars from the mid seventies thru 82. It has a longet input shaft (clutch side...lol) and needs the corresponding bellhousing that is longer (deeper) and uses a hydraulic slave cylinder for the clutch arm. The other is out of a truck, it has the same size shaft as the regular toploaders and is a easier swap. This is probably old news to most members, has any one seen Tom &Tammy Lee Hedmans 72 Maverick? I found this on HotRods website www.hotrod.com/roadtests/76119/index.html I hope all have recovered from New Years and had a good X-mas or any other celebration that you participated in.
Hi again im living in mexico about the shelby mavs i only know what is in this webpage but i hadn`t seen anyone and here in mexico the people isnt familiar with classics so its dificult to one mav, mustang, falcon etc in good condition only a few people like to restore them so this tipe of cars belong (almost all) to people that dont have money and here you can buy a mav in $800.00 and a vw sedan(bettle) 75 in $2500.00 lets say are cars of poor people and the ones with money prefer the new cars but when you have your classic in good condition everybody the poor and the rich loock toyou and always they fall in love with the cars but is very dificult to see one in presteme order and here in mexico the engines and trans and the diferential are others in theory are the same but this ones are made here in mexico so are a litlle changes for example here you cant buy a 9" rear mine have 8.5" and here the toploader with close ratio dont exist only in cobras but no mavs or mustangs and al gm ford mopar used the same 3 and 4 speed trannys only had to change the bellhousing and the ignition motor. im now thinking in buy 347 ci(not possible in mexico) from mustangengines.com but i have to improve a little my suspension but i dont know how to give it more traction i use 245/60/14 bf goodrich radials in cragar rims and the leaf suspension i modified it with for leafs instad of 3 and my final gear had a 3.07 ratio and know runs in 3.73 what could you recomend me. before anything thak you all and have a nicenew year.
Mendoza, If it makes you feel any better, I'm "poor" and this is my first Ford. I don't have much cash, and don't buy much with a credit card. There's been a lot of trial and error (what do you mean there are 28oz and 50oz balancers for 302's) Do you plan on this car being a dailey driver? A drag car, a street strip car? It depends on how you plan on driving the car. A 347 is a great motor, but does it exceed your needs. A 245/60 tire should do well, but, then again it depends on your application. Let us know hereand every one will give some input. Just remember these are are opininions, what works for one guy might not work for you. You might want to post a new thread regarding your specific questions, suspesion, engine, etc... Take Care, Dennis
