I installed a new trunk-lid gasket. Now, the lid sits very high. After letting the gasket compress, it slowly has gone down, but every time I open the trunk, the gasket starts "de-compressing". I think the gasket was made by Dan Carpenter parts. Anyone have this problem? Thanks.
Before I installed mine, I replicated the "holes" that were in the gasket from the factory. This helps get some of the air out of the trunk gasket when the trunk lid is shut....at least that is my theory.
I used a hole punch...the kind with different size hole choices on it. Instead of squeezing the handle and punching holes out, I did this: Before installation of the gasket, I inserted a round wooden dowel as a backer. I then selected the correct size hole and pressed that fitting into the rubber and against the wood dowel. This produced perfect size holes in the correct locations. Use the old gasket as a pattern/template. Look at this picture....right above the spare tire on the tail light panel and one can see the holes.
Now ya tell me. I have one of those. I'm going to "try" to squeeze the tube part into the tool, and punch 1/2 diameter, right at the "fold". So, when removed from the tool, the fold will flatten out to a complete circle. What diameter did you use?
Perhaps another method would be to use a heated soldering iron to melt holes. I think I still have a scrap left to try it out.
