Hot engine: won't start

    Hi folks.
    Maverick 1971, 6 cyl, 200 cu in.
    Starts clean when cold, nice idle. Impossible to start when hot...any leads on how to fix this?

    Could be a vapor lock problem where the carb boils the fuel after the engine warms up. A plastic spacer under the carb is usually enough to insulate it from the intake. If it drags when hot, it could be the starter.

    Does it crank slow? Could be initial timing too advanced.

    I cranks normal, fast. So far the starter works fine.
    The timing, just inspected with strobo lamp, I have it at "basically cero deg idle -advance hose disconected and closed- and then it clearly advances when speeding up revs, so it should be fine. No engine hesitation neither.
    It may well be vapor lock due extra heat uplifting and heating the carb... I will need to make a heat resistance plastic insulator and try again...
    I will work on it this weekend and come back soon with results!!!

    when the engine is hot does the starter turn over really slow? or still fast? the older they are..the more the heat effects them. my last one would get heat soaked and wouldnt budge once hot.

    It actually turns the starter normally... It is as if the engine simply could not lit the gasoline to start...
    I beleive it may be a problem with hot carburator... I will try insulating it from the inlet manifold using either backelite or some type of non melting nylon...

    a weak coil could be the problem also. the could be getting weaker as it gets hot.

    True... I also thought of the coil... I guess I need to replace it and try again...
    Actually, the engine worked fine for many years. Then it was garaged for almost 5 years and now it comes with this problem... the coild might have degraded and now fails when hot... I will try that asap. Thanks!

    If you did not drive the car for 5 years....carb probably needs a rebuild.

    True, that was one of my concerns... however, it was really garaged at a body shop and it was started eventually, to keep it "running"... so the carb actually works pretty well for an unit which I rebuilt a few years ago... It just went through the emmisions test (we have very tough environmental regulations) and it passed well, with very clean idle.
    ....As long as I don't turn the engine off during the entire test!!! Or it won't start for over 30 minutes!!

    I think your right! I had a 240Z that did the exactly the same. Mechanic replaced the coil and that was it. Coils have oil inside that cools them from getting too hot. Over time the oil is less effective. Anyway it's worth checking into. Good luck!

    Mine does that too! An neighbor came over and gave me an odd suggestion- He asked if i had any wood clothespins, I did and he stuck them on my fuel line from the mechanical fuel pump in various spots and the vapor leak issue has not been back. Ugly and odd but it worked!

    when cranking hot, try holding the throttle wide open as to clear a flooded situation.
