Came across this ad on CL http://topeka.craigslist.org/cto/4654257951.html

Currently live in a small town, 10-15 miles to nearest bigger town that I don't drive to often...so, this would still be a daily driver, but not driving everyday. What types of values should I be looking for? I've read mid 20s mpg? Any other helpful tips? Thanks!

I doubt you will see 20 mpg. Close....but in stop in go driving it will be less.

I'm just looking for cheap transportation around town that is reliable and/or cheap to maintain. By small town, I mean pop <10k, so mpg isn't too great of a concern. More concerned about what it gets on the highway somewhat, in case I took a longer trip...30-60 mi each way.

Welcome to the madness...Go buy a dodge neon or the like for cheap/reliable transportation. The mav will be reliable but it wont be cheap or easey (Parts availability) Until you dump some coin into it to get safe/reliable...They are cool cruisers...Great for weekend drives etc...You will get better mileage from a neon...Sad...yes...But true

Keep in mind that, even though it has low miles, it is still almost a 40 year old car. Reliability & cheap to maintain might be better applied to a newer Honda :)

I would recommend a Ford Focus.

Don't really care much for the 4 door models personally, but to quote roadkill, "that car is mint!" Looks to be in really good condition. Echo what everyone else says. Easy to work on, and pretty reliable once you have everything freshened up. But def not cheap. Gas mileage is good on the highway, and fair in the city.

I'd rather walk that depend on some 40+ year old car as a daily driver. People have tried before, only to waste boatloads of cash..unless you know cars very well, run away as a fast as you can.

40 year-old cars are not "cheap to maintain". Get something from the 21st century.

I've been watching the price of Mavericks and $3500 for a four door is a little steep. I agree with the others, get something newer.

Asking way too much for that car. Mint condition or not, i dont see it being very desirable to anybody other then MAYBE somebody with a bit of money that wants a little muesem time capsule..but even then, if it was only $1000 why buy it and daily drive it, racking all the miles up now. that car is gonna be a tough sell with all that green and extra doors..

    ...Buy a honda....
