i am installing a flex-o-lite fan in my car and have come to find out that the factory instructions are useless. i tried a temp switch on it that worked for about 3 minutes before it broke. i want to have the fan turn on whenever the car is switched on or running. what do i tie the power wire to? the ground wire should go to the battery negative . i tried tieing the positive to the coil wire and it draws so much juice that the car stalls. any help out there? :confused:
I had one of those thermostats too got rid of it. I just wired in a relay. Key on fan on Key off Fan off. WHich I assume is what you want. Good Luck
electric fan the best way is to hook a relay up but this method will work with a heavy duty switch, first hook a fused wire from the battery positive directly to the fan positive, then hook a wire from the battery negative to the heavy duty switch and then to the ground from the switch. It is not exactly what you want but it is simple and works as long as you remember to turn the switch on. otherwise you will need to find a key on power source and wire it into a relay
You can use the set up you mentioned, just run it through a relay and hook the coil positive to the relay coil. The fan current will then go through the relay and not your ignition coil.
Most fans draw a lot of current so you definitely want to go through a relay. Check the specs on the fan and make sure you use the right size wire to prevent a meltdown and potential fire hazard.
thanks for the info guys. i went with gents advice and just put a manual switch inside the car. i also added an additional fuse block under the hood to clean up the battery connections. the power mains are run in 10 guage and the ground is run in 14 guage so that should be plenty to handle the load. seems to have cured my overheating problem (at least for now) we will have to do more driving to really check it outbut it nows stays between 165-185.
