So I get home from work and jump in the car to take a drive, it's a great afternoon mid 40's and sunny. Open the garage door, turn the key, and it fires right up, runs sweet for 10-20 seconds then dies. What's up with that? I got no spark now. I have fuel, 12v to the coil(recent purchase), wires in good condition...maybe the module took a dump? Input please, the driving season is upon us!
Had same problem yesterday, after some digging it was a bad connection from the ignition switch to the fuse panel
OK you have 12 volts to the coil. Do you have spark to the distributor and in turn spark to the plugs?
I don't know where you store the car, but I have had fits over the years with mice getting under the hood and chewing the insulation off of the engine harness wires causing a variety of issues.
No spark at plugs, no evidence of mice. Coil, cap, rotor, and wires new last year. Got a Dura-spark box(blue) unknown age. Good battery. Car was started and ran several times this winter. Just not since the last cold snap(zeroish). Garage is attached. Will do more testing when I get home from work
Hey Rotor: I had a similar problem with a 73 Comet that was parked for some time and there was evidence of Rodents in the Engine Area so I put MOTH BALLS under the hood , in the trunk, under the floor mat and in strategic spots on the engine .. Problem solved.. No Rodents .. When we towed the car to the shop and dismantled it for parts there were visitors .. Just a thought. Cometized (Chip)
Well there's your problem, you dun wore it out... If there is voltage on battery side of coil, check trigger(negative) side while cranking, if it doesn't pulse the module or pickup is suspect... Of course you need to check for power on module, white & lt blue should be hot with ign and crank, while red & lt blue is hot in crank only... If there is power to coil but none or very little on negative, either the coil is open or there is a short in module...
From this pre-D/S box connector I get no power on the white/light blue in any ignition key position...
Well since the system has been added you're going to have to trace back to see where the the power source is... Just as a guess I'd be suspicious of those crimp on Scotch connectors...
The car came to me crimped, I was able to put 1500 or so miles on it last year with out a hitch...hoping I can stay out from under the dash Thanks folks
I don't believe your problem is under the dash. It looks like you have a number of connectors on a single wire. I would do as Krazy Comet suggests and focus on those module connections and continue your search back until you come to your car's original wiring. If you locate your break, you should try to rewire and eliminate as many connectors as possible. It appears you have an aftermarket DS module. The way your module is mounted, do your wires run out of the top or the bottom of your module? The reason I ask is because I have my DS module mounted in the same location as yours with the wires and connectors coming out the bottom. Therefore, my wires and connectors run under my windshield washer tank. You want to have the least amount of tension as possible on those connections. They should not be trying to pull themselves apart.
