hello, my (16 yr old) son just got his first car - a 1970 Mav/3 speed/manual/straight 6. neither one of us are particularly mechanically inclined, but part of why he got this car was so that he could learn. it's pretty clear the clutch is about done (had a local guy adjust it, but he said there's not much left), had a little trouble with it last night just getting it in to gear, etc on the way home from school. so i guess the question is, do you have a reliable parts supplier for a clutch replacement (and other things, as this is definitely a project), or is it best to just go to auto zone or o'reilly or whatev? thanks for any input. cheers...jeb
awesome, thank you. one question i meant to ask in that last and forgot...the steering column shifting is SUPER loose/sloppy. do you/does anyone know if there is a way to tighten that up? thanks again...
yeah, he's very stoked on it. it's a little tough on him to drive - never worked with a manual before, and we live in a very hilly community (southern california), so the learning curve is a bit steep, but he's getting it. definitely need a new clutch, though...he's moving thru what's left of the old one pretty quick.
Welcome to the forum!! Nice looking car!! Because the rest of the interior looks really nice you should look into get a dash cap for your cracked dash pad.
thanks for the idea...can you tell me exactly what that is? or do you have a picture of an example? any idea on cost? or where to get one? is it a custom thing or something you just put over the existing dash?
Here is a link to where I got the one for my '72 Maverick Grabber. It just goes over the existing dashpad and attaches with a supplied adhesive. It comes black but can be dyed to match the one in your car. It is an inexpensive fix to the cracked dash. http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=12405+01
ah...that's awesome, thank you. this is our first older car so i have no idea what's out there in terms of these kinds of things. that's a great help...thanks again.
from a fellow 1970 owner in Northeast Pennsylvania Is your ignition on the steering column or under the dash?
hi, thanks. it's not in the column...it's just to the right, i guess you'd call that under the dash, or in it.
You have an early model titled as a 1970 but referred to here as a 69.5 such as mine is - these early versions were introduced beginning in April 69 to get the Maverick out there to the public as soon as they could - in the fall of 69 what was then considered a regular 1970 model had the ignition in the column
