The folks at Marti Auto are looking into the problem because they said that's how it pulls from their database. http://home.comcast.net/~petebre/maverick/decode/1971.html This page seems to collaborate the others reports and the 8A trim codes as being for bucket seats. - Matt
Maybe the difference in the 8A from '71 and the LA from '72 is the insert material. The '71 GT buckets have the comfort weave inserts. Aren't the '72 GT bucket seat inserts all vinyl?
Yep, it's all in tact. I'm waiting to hear back from the folks at Marti to see what they are going to do about the screw up on the report.
One other thing I noticed on the OP's Marti Report: Under "Order Type" is says "Retail", that means his car was special ordered by the purchaser.
My 71 Comet that I had back in the 80s was a 302/3 speed stick car, floor shift from the factory. The interior was blue, and it came with a woven vinyl bench seat,(very much like Comfortweave, but perhaps more coarse round strands) and the door panels resembled Grabber/GT style with that insert panel in the upper section. The oddest thing was that it definitely had the shorter armrests. I robbed two nice ones out of the back seat of a Torino. That car was not a GT, but it was dressed up a bit... all the outer chrome trim. No other options though ... no air, no PS ... at least it had a radio. There probably were a lot of interior options available in Comets. The 72 that I have now, came with a plain-Jane grey-gold interior .... nothing special at all, but it was very early production that year, and probably meant to be a nice car to have on a dealer lot ... V8/auto/air/PS were the selling points.
I got PDF updates of my reports today and they reflected 8A being the black bucket seats. All is well and great customer service. As for special order maybe it was the black paint? If you look at the 1971 Mercury paint chip books, it doesn't include black like the 1971 Ford paint chips. If Inread the report right it likes like less than 2% of Comets were black in 71. - Matt
Glad to see that they are getting it straight for you! 'Retail' just means that the car was ordered to the specifications of the person that was going to buy it. 'Stock' means it was ordered by the dealership with what options the dealership wanted to use as stock for their lot.
A customer order to have the vehicle built with his choice of options, color etc is not really a SPECIAL order, it's just a std customer order... What would be special is say someone ordered charcoal grey that was maybe a T-Bird or Lincoln color... That would cost extra, whereas black being a std available color, added no increase in price... Also it would have blank paint code, a six digit DSO and on build sheet have Ford's stock number for paint used...
