What's the best place to purchase a good c4 transmission for my 73 Mav 302 ? I found a rebuilt one out of a 82 Cougar. Not sure if that will work.

All depends on what you mean by "the best".

    Daily driver? Drag Racer only?

I would probably suggest you take it to a transmission shop locally and get it rebuilt.

AFAIK a '82 transmission will be a C5 or AOD...

C5 is just a C4 with lockup converter, but requires a 164 tooth flexplate as the bell is larger and not readily interchangeable with early trans... Flexplates after '80 aren't balanced properly for a early 302...

Also the shift linkage probably would require some fabrication/modification...

Daily driver. I have a C4 automatic and when it shifts from 2nd to drive, the rpm's increase, like I shifted into neutral. Is there maybe a remedy for this like adjusting the bands? If I can avoid a total rebuild or a new transmission, that would be great.

I would have a transmission shop rebuild it. It really isn't that hard or costly in the grand scheme of things. Specially if you can pull and install it yourself and save that added labor charge.

Summit offers a new c4 for my Maverick for around $1070.00 delivered. About the same and sometimes lower that mine rebuilt.

I can get one rebuilt around me for $500 to $700 if I take them the transmission. That would include a shift kit as well.

Well I guess they're proud of their work around here. The prices range from $900- $1200+ if I bring it to them out of the vehicle.

Due you have a collage in your area with a automotive program see if they can overhaul for you if you buy parts.
My son overhaul his c4 for 250.00 all in incl. converter , master overhaul kit , shift kit, all parts were bought at a local trans parts house . All parts are just standard parts not anything special . He bought a step by step book from amazon .

c4 Trannys are way less complicated than the newer cars 5 to 7 hundred is right in the ballpark on price my torque flight in my Dodge truck wouldn't go into 3rd gear I had it fixed for a hundred thirty bucks and a shift kit put in keep asking around there is a lot of tranny shops around the price will vary a lot

Even MY mechanic friend can't seem to come down off the $1000+ mark. $900 is about the lowest estimate I've located around here. And that's me bring them the transmission.

tempting to have you drive it up to my house and we could pull the trans. and have it rebuilt w/converter.
it would be $500 plus gas to and from...
