had an autocross practice today. it was a blast.
    heres some of the runs.

so at the last practice i wasted my gears in the diff. it had to have happened because of the gear oil going into the axle tubes during the turns.
that was 4.10 gear ratio. i put baffles in and installed the thirdmember from my old black maverick. it has 3.89s in it. the 0.21 change really was noticeable. i felt that in the slow points that the motor rpm was to low and the motor was lugging a little. ill definitely be putting 4.10s back in.

Nice videos but I can't see how you can see clearly see the lane with all of those cones everywhere

i'm a little stumped that the difference between 3.89 and 4.11 ist that noticeable...

and as far as the cones are concerned, i'm with bob - it's a little confusing to watch ;)

learning to read the cones was the first hard thing to figure out. its like learning a new language. we do a course walk before we run, so that gives you an idea of what to expect when you flying through it all.
its possible that the gear change may have helped. today (the day after this video was made) i got first place and the closest time to other cars ive been following what times they run. the gear change does 2 things. reduces torque multiplication and lowers the rpm band to mph ratio. that puts the motor at lower rpms than with the 4.10s.

I was thinking about going to a new gear this coming winter. I've got a 347 and not a 331, so theoretically, I should have a little more bottom end to pull with at lower speeds. But after reading your experience, Im rethinking that. Most of the courses here have me up against the limiter at 6500 in 2nd. Surely this is on the downward side of peak power numbers so going to a lower gear should have me pulling longer while in 2nd gear. I suppose it really depends more on how broad my power band is. My cam was specked to give me a good power across the widest range but I dont know exactly what that turns out to be with my combination.

Nice pics. The car looks like a brawler.

i felt the loss of power but it may have been a good thing. i could still blow the tires off romping on it so controlling the traction is easier now.
