Well I have taken the sport lights off of the 71 Grabber parts car I have and the light sockets are bad so I got some replacement light sockets that accept the 1157 lamp, not knowing for sure how the plug part hooked up I cut the harness open to find out. I discovered that even though the plug is a 2 prong plug there are 3 wires going to it, I assumed that the wires were for each of the filaments (high and low) and the housing acted as the ground but this is not correct one of the wires is in fact a ground and the other is a filament wire meaning that there is no way to power up the other filament. Hmmm why did they use an 1157 instead of an 1156 My question is if you hook up both filament wires in new socket to pigtail wire and ground to other pigtail wire to ground on new socket which also has a ground wire provision and turn on both filaments will the lamp get too hot and melt lens. I know I could hook up the wires to turn signals and sport light switch and have them under the bumper and in the grill as well . Now I am trying to decide if it would be worth it to put clear bulbs in and use as fog lights or amber and make them really bright or split and have turn signals as well as sport lights. BTW this 71 did not have relay under kick panel for sport lights and the sockets were really easy to replace
i did that to my grille lights on the comet, hooked up both filaments. they're used as turn signals, however, so they're not constantly on. but i'd say it's safe to assume that they're not getting anywhere as near as hot to melt the lens...
They use one filament for turn signals and the other for running lights. Same as the Comet, since the harnesses are likely the same. The sport lamps used just one filament but should be wired for both after 71. I'm using the high filament for sport lamps and they're not near hot enough to melt the lens.
my sport lamps are amber turn signals... the bumper lights are clear lens w/clear 2075 bulb. they are wired into the headlights. low when headlights are on high beam and high when the headlights are on low beam...
