In pricing my rebuild I am finding that a solid crate motor short-block is getting hard to beat. I have the forged pistons, ARP rod bolts, cam I want etc. But in pricing rings, bearings and misc MINOR machine work, crate short blocks are looking pretty good. Anyone running one that they bought vs. built? If I do my own rebuild, which I have several times I am goig need to re-buy misc tools like ring compressot, honing tools etc, etc. etc. Just wondering if anypne is running a DSS or someone elses shortblock...:hmmm:

Not only are they usually a good value, they are usually assebled by professional engine builders. I have not heard many negative comments about the mainstream engines. They are definitely worth comparing. :bouncy:

I haven't got one yet but I been thinking about getting short block also. Its about the same price to build your own and a lot less work. I think i found 351 bored with good pistions and all this other stuff for like 1000 or so just depends on the time i catch it on ebay. Hopefully when i get money i will do that. Get some decent heads and bam got cheap brand new motor

The short block I just took out of my Mav was a crate job. Built by Racing Head Service in Tennessee. Came with a 1 year warranty. Always ran real good. Still only has about 29,000 miles on it. I just put together a 347 to take it's place.

It seems as if I can almost buy a crate shortblock for the same price I can buy al the parts! With the savings can go with a 347...hmmmmm

you can't beat the price and hp of a crate motor.. hey and even some come already broken in and come with a warranty.

the only thing i see of it is when you build your own motor you can say.. well i built it.. rather then saying you bought it.

but for me i build two motors and i know i can do it... i'll probably build one one more however if i do another car i will be another crate motor for sure!

an like every one said you can't beat the price not to meaning the laps of profanity when it don't start! :banghead: :D

This is my sixth or seventh engine so I can already say I did it.. Purely economics at work in my head. I can afford whatever direction I want, just not sure where I want to go...

DSS sells good stuff. and are good to deal with.
With the warranty and what-not...hard to beat a crate motor in my opinion.
What I have found out is the build price for them to do it verses me....is the same(basically) only difference that I have researched is the cost of shipping. But IMO, well worth it to have a solid, "warranteed" product.
