I have a 70 maverick that is in process to become a 302 from an inline. I want to put an 8.8 in it but of course am on a budget so I'm wondering what vehicles I could snag one from without much fabrication?
No matter which vehicle you snag one from, it will require modifications. Nothing will simply "bolt in".
Fabrication is not something I'm too good at, but relocating spring perches is something I can handle. Cutting tubes and things a long those lines I would probably have to have someone else do.
I would go with the Mustang rear from a mid 90's GT if I were going to do an 8.8 swap. The width isn't that much different, since you're going from 4 lug to 5 you need to get wheels any way so you can pick back spacing to fit. Much easier to do just the perches rather than an axle tube and perches.
Thanks Rick, I appreciate that information, my local pick and pull just so happens to have quite a few mid 90's mustangs right now. Looks like I know what I'll be doing this holiday weekend.
It is not just welding on on the new perches. They have to be welded just exactly right as far as pinion angle. Close enough will not work.
Good point Craig, it's so easy to assume people just know these things! For those that aren't familiar with setting pinion angles, Tremec has an app that will take your angles and give you a go/no go on what you have. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Tremec.tremec.app
