can you just get a higher amperage alternator and drop it in or do you have to get a different voltage regulator as well

when i am at a light my amp meter is bouncing like crazy, especially if the radios is on, my foot on the brake, turn signal on.

when i am driving, the amp meter stayes at 0 as in no charge.....

it is the original alt that i had in the 170 engine and the voltage regulator is for a 302 maverick and is a little bigger and painted blue...

    any help please

    thanks

Best bet is to get an alternator with a built in regulator - problem solved. But if you do upgrade your alternator with a direct replacemt style I would replace the regulator as well.

what about the wiring going to the voltage regulator......how do i wire them to the new alternator?

is there a easy way to do it without cutting all the wires up and tracing them?

I ordered my alternator PA-Performance. I ordered the Kit Car/ Race setup. You do away with all the stock alternator wiring. You will loose the factory idiot light function in the process. But who cares!

I've found a local starter/alternator repair shop that is a hole in the wall, but does good work and is cheap ...... rebuilt my chrome vette alt. for $29 ...... new was $120 ...... van for $35 ..... new $95 ...... go find one of those guys and ask ..... couldn't hurt
