The 351w is wider if you have seen 302 in one it is about as tight as I would want to go to change plugs. The 351w will fit with stock cast exhaust manifolds. However, lord help the one changing plugs. I say cut the shock towers back not a big deal. you can use headers but as far as headers and power steering goes it sux’s you have to use a drop bracket it drops it about 1 ½ inches. they sale for using power steering and the headers on the mavs and comets that for 302 or 351w and it changes the way the car turns left. With a 351w you have to drop it another inch so it really hurt the left turn. That is why I am switching to Manuel steering if you have any? Fill free to e-mail or vist my site it has photos and stuff on the 351w I put in my 1972 Maverick Grabber

440? is that a typo or did you mean 400? LOL I dont think a 440 would fit without removal of the stock suspension and adding a mustang II or strut type race-only suspension in the front. If you're considering a 351m/400...forget it. Those engines are only an inch or so narrower than a 460, not to mention they are heavy and shorter so there's no way they'd fit. A good build 400 will run well though. A 351w is tight, even with notched towers, and it's only about 1.5" wider than a 302.

    WELL

Well so far theres the stock straight 6 in and i saw this 351/440 on a site and i asked around and i asked my dad if it would fit and they said yeah but changing plugs would be hard but what if i didnt put in any power steering and just changed the engines how would it be then and the left turns would it be hard? Heres where i got the picture check it out its a good deal for whats in it.

351w / 440 Horsepower the 440 is the horse power. but 1st with stock cast exhaust manifolds you can kiss the 440 Horse power out the window prob drop it about 100 hp the way the engine is set up its set up to run big tube headers $7.000
you can get a long block from a rebuild shop or we have auto zone and advance auto you could get a stock short block crate motor for under $700.00 get a set of Alum 58cc or 61cc heads for about 1.000-1.200. intake and carb about $500 bucks. hot cam set up for engine to replace the stock around $250 under $2.700 and it would prob run as good as the other one with stock exhaust manifolds set of 3.55 or 3.80 gears about 2500 stall you could be runing mid to high 12s in the 1/4 easy
and if you don't put headers on it left turn are fine its the drop bracket that makes it turn left short the maverick is a light car so have no power steering is not bad at all

younginmav, just finished changing the plugs in my maverick with 351w. i have the removable shock tower braces and pulled the valve covers. that seemed to make it a little easier. i didn't put the 351 in the car originally. if you want to see what it looks like, i'll be at SIR on houghton road next saturday for the team race. there's a couple of other mavericks that race there also. costs $10 to get in i think. if you go i've got the blue maverick and i pit in the row across from the rest rooms. the 351 i've got is from pep boys. i've changed the cam, carb, heads, and some other things. if i pull the engine again i'm going to change the pistons to get some compression. i run a hughes 3500 convertor and 9" rear with 4:33 gears, moser spoll and 33 spline axles. it ran 12.92 at firebird last weekend and won the street class. SIR has a higher altitude so it'll run about .4 slower. i don't think your going to get an engine from autozone or pep boys and run 12's without doing a bit of work to it. good luck.:)
