Thanks just a shot in the dark here, but does anyone have one of those metal plates that goes between the block and trans? Mine is pretty bent up..... it would be a plate for a 302/c4 setup I cant wait to get this thing back on the road
Pulling my engine this weekend and contemplated having the c4 rebuilt. Was quoted $1000 by a local shop! OUCH! If I can rebuild the engine, can I rebuild a c4? Scotty P
wow, thats a lot. I had mine redone with manual valve body from PA and a few other racing nic-nacs, it was less than 1/2 of that grand.
Yes, you can rebuild your own C4, they are really not that bad.........however, you may need some specialized tools depending on how good you are with your hands. I had to make a tool to compress the spring in my clutch pack so I could replace the piston seal, not really that bad. It would help if you would get ATSG tranny manual before you started the rebuild. I started rebuilding my own c4's a couple years back and i'll never take it to anyone else!!!! You all need to listen to Old Guy, he's probably put more of these together than everyone on the site combined !! The $1000 on the rebuild sounds very high unless he's putting some real trick parts in it. There is a guy in SC that only charges $200 for a complete rebuild of a "stock" c4, with no extra goodies !
CometGT1974: Thanks. I'm in Aiken SC, near Augusta Ga. If he is in this part of state, I can probably find him. If you come across number, let me know. masondr19@yahoo.com.

Jeez, what is so involved with rebuilding a C4? I guess the going rates at the shops these days are between $300 and $500.....Last one we did we apparently didn't charge enough at $200 (fellow racer's C4) I belive it was. The rebuild kits are about $70 new....band is like $20 for the intermediate band (Low band is more expensive..but rarely needs replacing) and the shift kit can be made at home....for about a nickel. BTW, if you have rebuilt a V8 engine successfully....a C4 should be cake. Just get the Haynes manual and read it before you ever put a wrench to the trans....that way you'll be prepared for what's ahead. Once you get in there, you'll find that it was super simple and you'll probably want to do more of them! Well....maybe not.
