For those who have been keeping track of the Hooker 6208 information, I have some new information that should make everyone happ. Tubular Automotive makes a 1 7/8" primary tube header for the early 65-70 mustangs, I'll have to say that this looks like the ultimate off the shelf header available that will fit our cars with little modifications!! I am including a link to some pictures!!! I think this is another great performance discovery for mavericks/comets!!

That's a BIG primary tube. Gotta have stout engine for that size of header. Looks crazy too. Cool, I bet the sound from those is very unique. I would definitely consider those if I were using a trick windsor motor. I wonder what I will end up using on my DOHC motor w/twin turbos? Probably go with late model Mustang tuner parts or a custom set up, I prefer a custom set but the $ difference?

No doubt it's a big primary tube, these headers are only for larger displacement small blocks, this is listed as a "Race" header!!

    Question

I know that this is probably a dumb question, but what about block hugger headers? I realize that they do not flow nearly as well as a set of long-tubes, but will they fit a mav/comet? Just curious. I have longtubes that I bought from Mr. Raney. They fit good, and I was able to retain the auto on the column. Country

The problem that the 6208 and maybe the tubulars will fix is not header availability. Lots of companies make headers for our cars, but nobody makes anything specific for our cars that has a primary tube bigger than 1 5/8". The Hooker 6208 is a 1 3/4 primary put the entrance is somwhat "pinched" due to the bolt spacing. The Tublars are 1 7/8 and use an adaptor plate that opens up the bolt pattern to the "N" pattern ( I thing that's what they call it:confused: ) Which is much more desireable!!

I know I've dug an old thread, but this is proof positive I did a search before asking the following question:

Did we ever get a definitive answer to Country Mav's question? Is there some reason why block hugger headers will not work?

Are we ding-dang, without a shadow of a doubt, 100% sure that the factory "shorties" off a stock '87 - '93 GT will not work?

Are there some other "factory" type exhaust manifolds (from earlier '60s models) that can improve exhaust performance over 1973 factory 302
    exhaust manifolds?

I want to improve the exhaust on one of my '73 Mavs and I do not want to install long tube headers. I'm stubborn that way somethimes.:coco:

Long ago I tried installing 88 Factory headers in a 73 Maverick ... No fit .. no Way .. No how ...

Didn't Shelby make a cast-iron header? Pretty sure they are repopped and should flow better than a standard exhaust manifold ...

How about a set of shortie headers? Hedmann makes some.

yea, we tried them on a 68 Fairlane which has a huge engine compartment by comparison, wouldn't fit... they stick out too far perpendicular to the head. they don't turn early enough.

What about the tri-y headers I see on ebay alot? Looks like they ought to be an easy header to make fit but I think they have 1 1/2 primaries. Would'nt be too good for a monster small block but should be good for a mild engine.
I've thought about trying a set on my F100 since headers for it are hard to find since it has a 351w in it.

Kook's headers. Simple. They have the biggest selection of turbo headers available since they work directly with TurboPeople.

Looks good Stephen, I still do not think they will clear my mid-plate.

"K" code 289 cast iron headers

I always wondered how a set of the currently available (reproduction) 271 HP "K" code 289 cast iron headers would work if the had the "Extrude Hone" process done to them. It is a way to port items such as intake and exhaust manifolds by pumping an abrasive slurry/putty through them. I would like to know how well a set modified this way would compare to 1 5/8" tubular headers. If they did not cost too much power, it would be much more maintenance free and discrete.

Years ago there was a sleeper Falcon in Hot Rod that did this (it also had NOS plumbed under the intake manifold with the lines running through dummy heater hoses and triggered off of the horn ring!).
