I am getting ready to reinstall my A/C after doing the 302 install some months back, I bought all the mounts and a Sanden compressor with the Vintage Air bracket that mounts on the old shelf type cast iron bracket that came on the 302s. My question is does anyone here have A/C on their 302, if so could you post some pictures of the belt routing and correct pulleys, I have about 6 pulleys but am not sure which ones to use. My car does not have power steering if that makes a difference. The way it looks is the waterpump and Alternator run off one belt and the A/C from another by its self but I'm not sure. Also I'm not sure if the little aluminum bracket behing the alternator should be used or not with this combo, it looks as though the alternator is too far forward to line up correctly. Thanks for any help
Thanks for the pic MG, but I need someone that has A/C installed with no Power Steering, in other words a 2 belt setup. I don't know maybe what I have wont work, but my bottom pulley has 2 grooves the front one being bigger and the rear smaller with a wider groove and I have different pulleys for the water pump if needed..........Thanks everyone.
The A/C actually shouldn't change whether you have power steering or not. The P/S belt runs the water pump as well as the P/S and the A/C belt only runs the A/C and nothing else. The alternator should run on it's own belt too, on the crank pulley inbetween the P/S and the A/C. I Photoshopped the A/C belt to highlight what I mean: (I just reread your post that you have a crank pulley with 2 grooves..I am kinda stumped about that. My '72 looked exactly like the above pic. I believe the A/C would still have a crank pulley all to itself)
I have been told on a car with A/C and no power steering as mine that the belt routing is different, crankshaft, waterpump and Alt. run on 1 belt and A/C runs on another but I have mocked that up and the alt. does not line up properly with the waterpump pulley, I could run a 3 groove pulley like the one in the pic but would not have a belt adjustment for the waterpump belt since I have no power steering, as its the adjustment point.
I would think that you should use a double groove crank pulley ... One belt on the crank, A/C & A/C Idler One belt on the crank, alternator & waterpump. That is of course as long as it all lines up . I have no options in my Grabber and the Alternator lines up with the waterpump perfectly. It's just a matter of getting the correct pulleys ... I ended up using March Pulleys on mine to make sure everything lined up perfectly ..
