check your power steering fluid and your power steering belt. If the belt is broken ( or gone) then it can't turn the pump which equals no power steering.

Should return out of a turn even if power stearing went bad ... usually if the resivour is low or the unit is fixin to go out it will make whining sound (Sort of like my wife when i stay in the garage till 4am)

Check your power steering pump first, then check the fluid level. If the fluid is gone then it means a probable broke-hose (seen it).

    Broken or slipping belt?

Only other reason, a centering unit that fried and got stuck in the center position (never seen it, just a possibility).

The only time you really need power steering in a Maverick is when yer at a dead stop I would get rid of the power steering setup and convert to a Manual Steering setup, much easier to work on if something breaks and it's cheaper too. Plus as others have stated you gain more horsepower and from what I hear the parts for a Maverick Power Steering unit are difficult to find I would imagine expensive too but I could be wrong. In any event i'd dump it and go manual PS is just a conveinence feature anyhow it's really only good on large cars, trucks, and vans. As for driving it the way it is now I wouldn't if the steering is not working properly you could get in an accident. The Steering system ranks up there with the Braking System as far as importance goes you don't wanna play around.
