I think the 302 will be going in shortly, but I was wondering if I can use what I have with the 250 c/4 trans for the time being. I have a 4 spd toploader, but that itself will be a project. Do I need a new flexplate for the auto, (I'm assuming so, or will the 250 plate work, If I need to buy a bunch of stuff, the 4spd is going in at the same time I guess. Thanks for the help in advance

6 cyl flexplate is neutral balance; 302 needs external balance flexplate. about $45 at pep boys.

I put a 289 in my 77 which was a 250. Everything bolted up & worked fine. All the transmission stuff including the flex plate was original to the car & 250. The trans are a little different internally from what I heard but will still work fine.

    You will need a different flexplate ... 0 imbalance versus 28oz imbalance ... unless it's a later model 5.0 then you need a 50oz imbalance ..

i have a 6 cyl. flywheel if you want to pay for shipping. i learned small-block-ford balancing the hard way. i thought it would work with my 351..........wrong. had to replace it. if you want it you can have it. the teeth are in good shape.

nope 28oz. had a bad vibration with the 6 cyl. flywheel. when i got my new one, i saw the weight welded to it. wish i would have known that before i put it all together the first time. its all good now though.

OK .. I knew something was different about the 351W ... the 351W has remained 28oz while the 302 went to 50oz in the 80's ....

yeppers. an FYI for anyone attempting an AOD swap, 164 tooth 28oz imbalance flywheels are not rare on a 351 with an AOD... work just fine.

the motor is out of a 94 or 5 mustang gt or cobra or something, had to tear it down, wiped out the crank, crushed oil pick up tube.

No, I'm not taking a 302 out to drop in a 6, I may however, if I find another decent project, swap in an efi 2.3l with a 5 spd :D
