My key switch is on the dash. It also has sort of like a tray that goes all the way across the bottom of the dash that bolts into the sides of the car and the bottom of the dash. It did have AC,, so Im thinking that is why the tray is present. I did misread the vin identification process,,,, Instead of being made in October, it was made July 31, 1970, in St. Thomas, then the "DSO" is a #24 for Jacksonville. What does the "DSO" stand for??? It did have the 200 inline 6, C4 tranny. The rear end has a plate bolted onto the back, not like a 9 inch, etc etc,, it does have a fasten seat belt light in the guage cluster, the speedo turns yellow at 70, red at 85 up to 120mph,,, with 74,990miles showing. With it having a narrow tranny tube, I guess the AOD is out, and the C4 has to be in,,, But, from what I have read, did they make a flywheel for an 88 5.0 roller engine, to adapt to the C4 torque converter, and be the right balance? The Ball joints have been replaced on my car, 4 bolts hold them in place, (upper) Does anyone have a photo of a center console and shifter for a maverick? I dont think my column shifter is going to work,,, the manifolds are going to be in the way, and so is the bellhousing,, just being bigger from the 6 cyl to the V8. My T-bird exhaust manifolds appear to work, once I do some grinding to clear the towers,,, not much,, they dont touch now,, but if the engine flexed, it may hit, so a little has to be cut off, but, they dump right out the very back, and past the steering gear box, so I got that going for me so far,,, I appreciate everyones willingness to share info with me, not many do that these days, and have to learn for themselves, nothing wrong with that, but it sure does make it fun to learn more and save some time!! Thank you!! More later on my 70,,, Chad

All 70 Mavericks had the package tray under the dash. If I were you, I'd go with the AOD. Its not too hard to open the tunnel some. Overdrive rules!!!

The standard grill for the 70 to 72 Maverick was the plain with the medallion in the center. Starting in 71, only the Grabber or LDO package came with the grill lights. The running and turn signal was wired together to be a little brighter and they called it "Sport Lamps." Starting in 73, all Mavericks had grill lights although they became dual function.

Thats what I was thinking on how the grille is supposed to be on the 70,,,, I have had this car for so long, that I had to think for a while, so I dug up some old photos of the car when I first got it,,,,, I took them the day I picked it up,, I remember that day clearly,,, LOL,,, rainin, and no brakes, but I still drove it home! LOL! I had it sitting at my brother in laws house for a few months,,, my memory serves,,, he had a 72,,,, when I picked my car up from his place, the rear valance was missing off of my car!! Nothing else out of the ordinary ya know,,,, so I thought that was the only thing that was taken,,,, UNTIL,,, I dug out the old photos,,,,, just today, Sure enough, badge inthe middle of the grille, and lights near the bumper. After looking closer at the grille I have, and the car's front panels, the brackets for lights are missing, but can tell something was there,,,, and on the lenses of the turn lights, there is a date on em,,,, "72" all the other lenses on the car say 70 on em,,,, so I think,, no,, I know, I got the old switcharoo!!!! Anyways,,,, Ill try and find a 70 grille somewhere,,, I am not in love with the tiny tail lights though,,,, what are you guys with the wider tail lights using? They look like what is on a Mustang shelby, or a GT from the 60's. Or should I keep em?? Ill get that engine out of my T-bird this week,, see if I can find a large shoehorn to fit the AOD in that tunnel. Right now,,, with the C4,, It has probably 2.5 inches plus on each side from the tunnel,,, Is the problem closer to the firewall, or is it the tunnel further back that give the AOD fits for room?

    Year model

    Chad,
If your ignition switch is on the dash-it's a '69 1/2. Mavericks debuted in April of '69-kind of like the Mustang debut of April of '64. Ever hear of a '64 1/2 Mustang?

DSO stands for District Sales Office. I think dealers had certain sales offices
that they ordered cars through-probably a storage yard after they left the factory on trains etc.

So could it have been sold as a 70 model though??? For sure the key is mounted to the tray, bolted to the dash under the dash itself, The steering wheel, which has been torn up, and they put a vinyl cover over the wheel where it bolts to the column,,, anyways, the steering wheel, had a horn ring, that followed the contour of the steering wheel, probably a half moon in shape, the ring was busted off and covered up with that vinyl pad. They left the broken parts or what was left of the steering wheel on it and covered it over,,, I have alot of pictures to show of the parts, so If anyone could veiw them to help me Identify exactly what Ive got,,, That would be most helpful. Another difference, on the lights below the bumper the 69 1/2 and 70 models used clear lenses with amber bulbs while the 71 and 72 models had amber lenses.

You have a very early 70 model often called a 69 1/2. They were all titled as a 70. Its the same thing as the 64 1/2 Mustang. They are all titled as a 65. Only purest like ourselves call them by half years.

    Lights

And again, I am really confused! I have a 72 with the yellow turn signal lights in the grill and there are still some clips on the underside of the bumper (small bumper) where there was some sort of light mounted. Maybe the Sport Lights (Fog/Driving Lights) were mounted. I have a SPort Light switch inside under the dash which leads me to believe that it actually had them at some time.

QUESTION: Do the sport lights go UNDER the bumper or IN the grille of a 72 Maverick Grabber?

Your 72 would have had the Sport Lamps in the Grille and amber turn lamps under the bumper and above the valance.

1970 is of course correct. the mounting brackets on your small bumper are where the blinkers mount. someone must have converted yours to use the grill blinkers. course now you could hang some lights off the bumper and use them as fog lamps if you so desire.

Thanks. So......with all that being said. Is there any way to tell which lamp is a sport lamp and which one is a turn signal other than their location on the car? I have seen the ones under the bumper (turn signals?) and the ones in the grille (sport lamps?). When I think of Sport Lamp, I think of something more like a driving light or fog light - would this be a correct way of thinking or is Ford using it as another term to pretty much mean "extra, yet cool looking lights"?

Basically what I am getting here is that Sport lamps are in the grille and turn signals are under the bumper. Right?

Yes, the Sport lamp was like a driving light. I believe that once the grill mounted lamps became the parking/turn lamps all of them had amber lenses. The Sport Lamps had clear lenses. I have seen the grill lamps modified to accept the small H4351 headlight (brighter).

So yea Sport Lamps in the Grille and Amber Turn Signals under the bumper for your car.

Thanks. I think I'm going to try it. Anyone have any spare under bumper lights I can get so I can move my turn signals to where they belong?
