    Hey guys,

I am going to attempt to start the 302 tomorrow, what do i need to have? I know battery, jug of gas for the carb, but what else should i do before I even try to start the engine? engine has been sitting for an indefinite period of time, so it hasnt been started in a while but has been covered up every since the car was parked, so what would you guys recommend me doing before I attempt to start the car?

    TIA,
    Kris

1st, put a socket and bar on the crank bolt and turn the engine over by hand to make sure everything moves. remove spark plugs. check/change oil, remove coil wire & crank engine until you have oil pressure. this should also bring up some gas from the tank. then replace coil wire & spark plugs (if gaps are ok), prime the carb, try to start. how old is gas in tank? i like to use a shot of starting ether to fire it, rather than dribbling gas down the carb. cleaning and tightening the battery connections & checking cells for water is a good idea, too.

but if the coil wire is not hooked up and the spark plugs are not in the car then how is the car going to even attempt to start? I dont understand that...

That is just to get the oil pressure up and circulating...once the pressure is up then you can replace everything and it should fire up(as long as there is fuel in the carb)

while the plugs are out...put a little light oil in each cyl. and let set for a short time before you turn the motor. this way if you have a stuck ring it will have a better chance of breaking loose.
they sell a tool to put in the dist. hole and spin the oil pump shaft with. this will prime the motor with oil before starting. (y)
have a good battery........expect a fire, that way you will be ready if one starts..frank...:bouncy:

If the car has points, make sure you clean them real good or put a new set in.

if you reread my post you may notice the sentence that tells you to reinstall the coil wire & spark plugs this time.

It will turn over just fine. Just won't start without spark. Just remember, you need fuel & spark to fire.....If one is missing, it won't fire....
