Been looking thru the hot rod magazines for a good floor shifter for my 69.5 maverick. Some are pretty econmical, kinda give ya the race car look,, but Im more of a stock in appearence kinda guy,,, At least a factory ford style shifter. My car originally had the shifter on the column, but I dont belive that I can make that work out since I have put a V8 in it. Does anyone have any photos, and recomendations on a good shifter to use, and pictures of them installing it in their maverick? What should I be lookin for? Mustang? Cougar? any thoughts? Thank you in advance! The restoration is coming along nicely by the way!! Got bout 80% of the body work done,, which I did not have to do much,, mostly sanding it down and pop a dent or three out,,,, Now I am working on the engine and tranny,, one thing at a time, but wishing I could do it all at once,,, Chad
You need the V8 column shifter linkage if you want to keep it on the column .... If want a factory floor shifter .. there are lots of postings about installing them ... do a search ....
If your car had a 250 6-cylinder I would think the brackets are the same as a V8 ... the 170 or 200 would be different ..
I dont think there is any difference in the shift linkage between the 6 cyl and 8 cyl. The trans stays in the same place and the clutch cross shaft is in the same place. Why would they be different?
The column shifter linkage doesn't bolt to the clutch mount boss on the block (at least on my 250 it doesn't) ... it mounts using the lower 2 bellhousing bolts on the backside of the bellhousing. Since 302/250 uses the same bellhousing they should be the same. Not sure if the 170/200 linkage would bolt onto the 250/302 bellhousing ...
Still the only difference should be the engine side bracket for the cross shaft. The 170/200 should be the same and the 250/302 should be the same.
The 170/200, the 250, and the 302 all use a different set-up from each other. You can see the differences in the illustrations on page 187 of the Chilton's Maverick/Comet repair and tune-up guide, part #6634.
Ahhh ... the 302 version does use the cluch z-bar pivot boss to attach the linkage .. I don't understand why the 250 and the 302 would be different though ... I suspect the 250 setup would work on a 302 car ....
My car had the 200 with a C4. Bench seat. The diagram helps alot to show what the parts need to look like! Thanks! Chad
I agree with Dan....I thinkg the 250 set-up would also work on a 302...as long as you had all the pieces.
Scrapper ... the 250 and 302 use the same bellhousing. Since the 250 linkage bolts to the bell housing and has nothing to do with the engine width and block it should work. I'm sure Ford had a reason to use the 302 block as a mount for some reason ... I have no idea what it could be though ...
