I got the 88 roller 5.0 in the 69.5 Maverick! Bolted down. Been thinking of belt pulleys alot these days,,, and how to convert it from a serpentine back to the old V belts. All I have to run is an alternator,, My question is, will the older 302 belt pulleys, (crank, water pump) fit the new Harmonic balancer?? Also, what radiator is the best to consider,,, are the 60's mustang V8 radiators a good fit, or are they just about as close as the V8 maverick radiator? As for a floor shifter, I took the 88 t-bird shifter out, and was able to use it in the maverick, Im going to build a wood console for it to surround it, maybe out of Cedar, or Mohagany (spelling) All I have to do now is make a bracket to hold the shifter cable to the tranny to keep it still. The 88 starter works,,, I got the 50oz, 157 tooth flywheel, and bolted the 88 starter to the C4, tried it out, and it worked very well, with no spark plugs in,,, LOL!! It dont clash, or jump teeth,, sounds a little louder than when it was on the big flywheel and the AOD,, Hopefully that works out in the long run,,,, Ill have more updates on my progress,,,, See ya! ChadS
Chad, My motor and radiator came from a '90 Mustang. The water pump rotation was an issue (because of where the inlets/outlets are on the water pump and the radiator). I (mistakenly) used the March pullies and alternator relocator.Reference: http://www.marchperf.com/ford_serps.html My combination has the serpentine belt running from top left to top right - right in front of the distributor. A dangerous route for the belt for sure. I intend to go the the early 80's (I believe) Thunderbird Water Pump which will bolt up to the Timing Chain Cover and the correct rotation for the inlet/outlet of the Mustang radiator. I will switch to single V-belt going to alternator also (going electric wp). Food for thought. Good luck
Rick, What are the measurements for the 90 Mustang radiator? I can fit the 88 t-bird radiator between, but its too tall for the hood to close. Its about 3 inches too tall,, is the 90 radiator shorter in height? I got bored, so I went ahead and put all the serpentine belt system on the engine today,, Surpized,, it all fit! Only bad part to this is I dont have power steering, which the 88 bird did,, do the pump is there, but nothing to hook it up to,, Also, wiring the new style alternator to make it charge,, its a 2 plug alternator,, maybe if I study the schematics long enough,, go crosseyed,,, I can retro fit it,, I really think I like the serpentine set up,, Kinda give the engine bay a new style look, dont know if that is popular or not,, Do you guys think if I got a power steering gear box, I can hook up my power steering pump to it? Or can I take a non power steering box and hook it up? I havent paid much attention to the box to see if it has any kind of plugs to hook up any lines,,, if it does, can it be done? Is the power steering gear box bigger, or different than the one on my 69? Thanks! ChadS
Chad, I'll get a picture and measurements tomorrow morning for you. BTW, I removed the radiator support all together and made a removable one to get the engine AND tranny out together (as one) easier. Oh yeah, I suppose I should tell you, in order to get the big Mustang radiator to work in the Maverick, the lower radiator hose runs through the front clip frame and comes out in-line with the water pump! Now THERE'S something for you to ponder until I post the picture.
Chads Good job with the engine swap !!! Are you gonna run the EFI or the carb ? Rick please post a picture of that, I have 3 of them radiators from parts cars and I`ve been wanting to put one in my mav .
The Radiator is apprx 28" Wide X 18-1/2" Tall X 3" Thick. Note: This is a work in progress, but the radiator part of the project is done. I will be going to a single V-belt (to the one-wire alternator) before I take it to the track. Can you tell by the rust on the pullies how little the engine has run? Note also the '90 Mustang belt tensioner 'reversed' (by removing the spring inside it and turning it around). Current set-up "New" Radiator Support (Aluminum Angle): Ram Charger Dual Electric Fans You can't see it in the pictures but the Mustang radiator outlet (going to the bottom of the water pump) is directly in line with the channel of the 'frame'. I cut off the end of the channel and ran the hose through it. I cut a hole out of the channel (on the inboard side) where the hose could be routed through to the WP inlet. I split a vacuum hose and put it around the hole in the channel to keep the hose from rubbing against the metal.
Lookin good!!!!! Thank you kindly! I wondered if I could notch the front frame to set the radiator lower,, My radiator is 30 inches wide, tank to tank, Im looking into smaller radiators, crossflow,, maybe a chrysler mini van radiator looks promising, and even looks stock in appearence,, I did get er fired up last nite! I got the alternator wired up and charging, I used the same distributor you have in your engine, but runs without the computer, I have a 6AL MAD with the timing control to control the timing until I set up a better distributor with advance controls in it. I was even able to use the 88 t-bird fan!! I have about 3 inches between the radiator, and the fan. Im running a carb on my roller engine, Right now its a 2bbl, but I have a Edlebrock performer rpm dual plane and a Holley 750 with mechanical secondaries with the ford kick down lever. I did not want to shake the holley up too much when I put the engine in the car, so I left the 2 bbl on it. I put that on there bout 2 years ago, It was SEFI,, but the pump in the tank was bad so I swapped it. Funny thing was bout that,,,,, the pump in the tank, would not build pressure to run the SEFI,, but would run a carb without over powering the float!! HAHAHA! Thats how I learned it was the pump the whole time,,,, Im looking into power steering,, or figuring out how to eliminate the pump and put in an idler pulley to take its place. Chad
Photo of my 69.5 with a 5.0 http://www.rieckesbaysidegallery.com/programfiles/talers/69maverick2.JPG Here is a photo of my 69.5 maverick, with a 1988 5.0 out of a 88 Thunderbird. It has the serpentine belt system, and Im still looking for a radiator, still a work in progress, but it fires up and runs great! Kinda greasy still, but will get er cleaned up! Click the link. ChadS
Good deal, Chad. Nothing like hearing a motor run after so much toil and trouble. Are you going to be running an A/C or is that acting as a pulley/belt spacer now?
Yeah, it sounds good! Ill hook up the A/C eventually,, The car originally had AC so it wont be hard. Id say the power steering pump is more of the idler,, LOL! I picked up a set of early mustang long tube headers, The cast Iron t-birds would work,, but they were tight, and thin after I machined them down. The passenger side header will be no problem, the drivers side will be a SOB to change the plugs, the front tube goes right over the top of the reast of the pipes, Ill have to dent em just a tad to clear the steering box, but I think they will be just fine. They are original ford headers,,, they have ford motorsports stamped in em, and M302 on em as well. I got the shifter and linkage rod finished up last night, I used the shifter out of the t-bird, and made a rod to hook up to the tranny. I can catch all the gears in the right spots on the shifter, the rod looks a little funky, but it dont hit nothing, and does not bind. I still have to find a speedocable,, NAPA dont have em,, so Im hunting. Other than a few hunderd little other things to finish up, its coming along nicely. LOL! ChadS
