This could also be an entry for the Rick Book jack stand racer category in the virtual car show. Work has been slower than expected - normal. I am happy with the way things have been going together. Sad part is most all of this is a mock-up has to be blown back apart and finished in some form (welded, grinding, paint etc.). Biggest job is to finish the headers. I think the hard part is done. All 8 are routed to the bellhousing. Need to bring them together and set the collector. At this point all the parts are only tack welded and will have to come back out for finish welding. Still have to do brake lines and finish the strut arm attachment. I picked up the strut arm bushing sleves from the machine shop today. Surprisingy the V6 mustang II springs make the car sit too high. I'll probably cut the springs for now but there are plenty of Mustang II springs available that I can replace them later. The only weight really missing is the hood, coolant, and finish headers.
Dang it! I drooled on my keyboard. Wow. That's gonna be killer. Keep up the good work and the photos coming.
You're doing mine next, right? Good job. Still love the scoop and I especially loved the jab at Rick.
Rather than cutting the springs, you might want to check out a set of dropped spindles. At about $250 to $320 depending on where you get them, they give you the full spring, leave the control arms in the designed arc of motion and leave you with a better ride. I used a set of 2" dropped spindles on a 70 mustang with v8/ac MII springs which left me with a good ride height, comfortable ride and no bottoming out in the corners like when I was using cut springs. I was running a 429/c6 out of a 70 T-bird so the weight was similar.
Finally made it back to the computer....I saw Ricks suggestion for the jackstand racer category on the vitural car show thread and I immediately said - That's me. Thanks for all the comments - its keeping me motivated. I was in header burn out. Fitting pipes is like bodywork to me - I can only take so much. Started on the finish welds for the right side primaries tonight. Still a long way to go but at least I can see the end of the header part of the project. Earl - I've never been to a FFW. Wouldn't mind seeing one. Couple of guys from work always go and it always sounds like a good time. Hawco - One of these is enough for a year. Once this is done I need to jump back on house projects. I'll be tweeking on this for a long time coming. I also cut one half coil from the springs. Probably could have gone 3/4 but I'm happy for now. I agree with jayman on the dropped spindles for lowering a car. Way to go if they are available for your application. I really need less spring rate to correct the geometry. The mustang II lower control arms are supposed to be slightly angled down (almost flat). With a full spring mine were way too high. The steering would have had a ton of bumpsteer without correcting. Should be OK until I can swing a new set of springs. More later Cleaver
