It was not a very good maiden voyage for the new set-up. I made 3 passes, 1st pass: It was a VERY soft set-up. 24 degrees of timing, 1500 rpm on the launch and short shifting at 5,000. She ran a 7.25 @ 100 mph's. 60 ft. time was a 1.79.(overall not bad considering all the above) 2nd pass: timing was set at 36 degrees, still left at 1500 rpm, this time I was going(emphasis "going") to run it up to 6,000 rpm. It left "HARD"(1.48 sixty foot) went straight right, pedaled it, then went straight left, pedaled it, went straight right....enough of that! Let off of it went through the traps a 45 mph and ran a 8.30 something?......figured out with the new motor that I could NOT get away with running 10 pds. of air in my slicks! (it was a little scary lesson, but still a lesson learned) 3rd pass: 15 pds. of air in the tires. 36 degrees on timing, still leaving at 1500 rpm. Well........ when it launched it went straight as a arrow, wheels up for about the first 25 feet. 60 foot time was a 1.41( thats pretty good considering the low launch rpm with a 4500 stahl) when it came time to slam it into 2nd gear is when everything went bad. To try and shorten up this long story, then tranny let go and now it is back in the shop. BUT, it sure felt good to be back at it after a year and a half lay-off.
Sounds like you got a fast 'un on your hands! Breaking after three passes probably wasn't much fun, but at least you've got your motivation to get it running once again.... Good luck!
Thanks, CACollo. Even after all the money I spent on the car this winter, I knew I still had some weak areas on the car.....the tranny was one of them!
That must be a painful and happy feeling at the same time. With what will be, you must be on fire! With what happen you must be hurting and your wallet lighten, and to have something let go on the track always make me cry inside. All I can say is I feel a little sorry for all the GM's guys that are going to be embarrassed by your Maverick! Ok I'm lying about the embarrassed part. If I mis spelled any words tonight let me know tomorrow! Thanks, Bossmav
The set-up.... Its a 347 stroker, Eagle 4340 crank/connecting rods. Canton 7 quart pan(machined to fit!! LOL) front/mid plate. SRP pistons, Lunati solid roller cam/Lunati roller rockers. Manley pushrods. AFR 205 heads. Super Victor intake(port matched) and a Quick Fuel 750(custom) carb. Howe aluminum radiator/CSI electric water pump. Ford 9inch(4.86 gears) a C4 tranny(we know about that!) 9 inch M/T slicks and Moroso front runners. The car weighs 2635 pds with me in it(I weigh around 230/ on a good day!) Yes I "WILL" have it ready for the round-up!!! It should(hopefully) be tuned-in by then. I race at Ohio Valley(Saturdays) and once I get the car straighten out I will go to US60(Fridays) and I do plan on making a couple trips to Beechbend someday! Thanks for all the words of encouragement, I am not discouraged, at all. Those 3 little passes just fueled my fire!!!!!
Maverick.. What are you shifting at (RPM)? Are you happy with the super victor (I assume you are) and why did you choose that and not the victor jr intake? Sounds like I'll have something pretty close to you once I'm done except I plan and putting mine on the gas as well.
I am not sure what rpm's I will end up shifting at. I have ALOT of test/tune to do to the car. The first couple runs are just going to be easy passes. Do plug checks and check other stuff before I started pouring the coals to it. I figure somewhere around 6500 or so. I am going totry and get the launch rpm's up around 3000, that should help pick up some e/t. I to plan on putting the bottle on it, but I need to get the motor combo figures out first then I will put the spray on it. That will probably happen next year. I figure that will get me solidly in the 5 second zone. As far as the super victor goes, I am not sure why I went with that. I read a article in one of my mags about a motor they built, that made 565 horses. I built basically the same motor, except they built a street motor with a mild cam and low compression. I went with a pretty radical cam( I forget the specs, something like 275 duration on both sides with 650 lift or something like that) and I went to 13.5/1 compression. Also coil-overs and ladder bars.
