...We should send those guys a cake or something! Or send it to Selvey and those guys who keep in touch with the editorial staff. In case some of you don't know what I am referring to, the latest issue ranks a value guide of Ford/Merc products from the 50's-70's as well as suggestions for affordable/desireable cars to restore/modify. Comets and Mavericks made #3 on their list !! I agree with them that the most popular is the Maverick, although they like the Comet GT graphics better. Yeah for us GT owners. I also agree with them that the cars to buy are the Grabber/GT versions and to stay away from the ... how did they put it, 'cowcatcher bumper' versions? That's exactly why I dumped the '74 bumpers on the Comet GT for '73s. I would have preferred to have gone with the '71-'72 Comet bumpers, but I wanted it to be somewhat close to original, so now I have a '74 Comet GT that looks exactly like a '73 Comet GT. I also agree with those who advise investment in V8 cars with only 2 doors. I'll duck now and wait for the I-6 Fodo lambasting. Good job to Selvey and Stalnaker and the others who stay in contact with these magazines letting them know we are here. Seth
well what is rong with getting a i6 car you can get a i6 car to out run a V8 car on the 1/8 mile with the right gearing
When was the last time you saw a 250 do lower than a 10.6 in the 1/4? When was the last time you heard a 250 sound nicer than a 302? When was the last time you heard somebody say, "Oh man that car has a 250, whoa!"? That is what is wrong with an inline six. I thought very seriously about putting a 250 in my mav up until about a week and a half ago when I got a 302. Sure they can be made to be fast enough, but when you pull up and you open the hood and say yep, a straight six, its just not the same feeling. The sound of a six will never match up to the coolness of a v8, Dennis' car reafirmed that for me at Carlisle. I dont mean to get anybody mad or start a fuss, I was going to put in a 250! Its just that the v8 is just so much cooler. -Todd
hum.. i have been really thinking about building a 6. Why.. well to be differant. I already have a two v8s so why not build something differant. I mean thats why we drive mavericks right... infact that what maverick means. so by all means build what you like. if i ever get a chance to scan these photos of this I6 maverick with a turbo on it you'd wanna build one too! p.s. i work here at the magazine wheres my cake! j/k
We have a small track close to town that I used to visit every weekend. The first time I went this guy up there had a 72 Mav 2door and was running a 300 six. He was turning times in the 1/8 miles of 6.99 and I couldn't tell you what his set up was but he did say that he had the potential of running in the low 6's high 5's. Just ran out of money . I will say that it was quite empressive when he pulled the hood off of that car and seeing that 300I-6 with the two 750 Holley 4 barrels. I am still running the original I-6 in mine but will be soon changing it but, me personally I don't really care if anyone ever says wow look at that car I just want it to have it in there for me personally. Thats what I built the car for anyway.
Great to see the Mavs/Comets getting more recognition! I have to say it's great to see Mavericks/Comets getting more attention all the time! As far as the I-6 and V-8 discussion, I agree with what has been said about what can be done with the I-6, I kinda of like the idea of having something different from the crowd, but there is something special about the sound of V-8 etc. The best solution is to have one of each!
todd: you never herd a 200 or a 250 with duel gasspacks have you and I`ll bet that when whoop but on the drag strip , open the hood some one sez whoa thats a 250 !!! , I have seen a ford mustang with a 200 i6 do the 1/8 mile in 9.4 seconds .
ya know if someone had a good head for a 250 or even a 200, I'd be game for building one for the street. Wonder if it's possible to make a 400 HP turbo 250? I think so......
Of course it is all my opinion. I was going to build one myself if I hadnt found that 302 for a bargain. There is nothing wrong with sixes at all dont get me wrong, I was just saying how I feel that v8s are cooler. The potential is there for a six to be fast. What I am saying is that there is just something about the v8s that make me smile personally. I think i saw somewhere online that there are crossflow heads from australia, for those of you who might be interested, that are often modified to be very formidable. If youve got the money... -Todd
mavman: go to www.fordsixparts.com if that don`t work then go to www.fordsix.com and look for the parts link
There used to be a guy at the track I raced at who ran a falcon with a 300 I6 . It ran 10.50 s in the quarter . All I remember was he had 351C heads ( head ) on it . He took two heads and cut the end 2 cylinders off one and the two middle cylinders out of another . I think they were welded but not sure . He did have a big plate on top of the head with long studs going thru to distribute load better . It had a 4 speed and used to leave hard enough to dangle the front wheels . Scared the shit out of the chevy boobs
