so when i bought the 76 the heater core was already disconected from the hoeses but had yet to be replaced with the new one in the the guy had already bought and left in the trunk. i was planning on getting some heat going this weekend but dont exactly know how. looks like i need to get behind the dash, may be even remove it? looks like i cant get to it under the hood since its behind the metal fire wall.

Well since I still have my Chiltons out:

    Removing the heater box:

    1. Drain the cooling system and disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2. Disconnect the blower ground wire (black) from the fender apron.

    3. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine block.

    4. Remove the five heater assembly to firewall attaching bolts from the firewall.

    5. Working inside the car, remove the ignition switch and plate from the package tray and remove the tray from the dash. (they had a 69 1/2 Mav I guess?)

    6. Remove the right kick panel and remove the package tray bracket.

    7. Disconnect the heater control cables from the heater.

    8. Disconnect the defroster air duct from the top of the heater.

    9. Disconnect the heater blower motor lead wires from the resistor at the bottom of the heater.

    10. Remove the one screw from the bracket that mounts the heater to the dash.

    11. Remove the heater from the car by pulling the heater hoses through the firewall, then disconnecting them from the heater.

    Heater core removal and installation:

    1. Remove heater assembly. (outlined above)

    2. Remove air inlet seal from the heater assembly.

    3. Remove eleven clips from the heater assembly flange and separate heater assembly housing.

    4. Remove heater core from heater assembly housing.

    5. Reverse procedure to install.

Depends if your car is factory air or not. If its not, you dont have to remove the whole heater box. You can just pop off the clips and remove the facing cover.

Yea, you didn't mention if it has A/C or not. If it does, let me know and I'll post the instructions for A/C.

Don't thank me, thank my old greasey,, falling apart, held together with black duct tape, green Chilton's book. :) My dad bought it in the early 80's and used it for years and then gave it to me and I've been wearing it out even more since about this time last year.
