Chezzz! Ok here Xtasea can you answer ? okay hubby talked with the guy...he brought it to the shop and they told him that it had the wrong sparkplugs in it...The plugs were completly fried...it cost them 250 to fix...so they paid for it, alls well, and she is running again as of today...Funny thing is that I never had that problem..I dont know what kind were in it, but I really think with all of the auto wotk that my hubby has done, I dont think he would have put the wrong sparkplugs in the car...if he was running her hard, could this have caused the problem with the plugs? Just wondering... How did the car get to the shop? Tow? Drive it in? What plugs were in the car? What size engine? , When's the last time they were changed? Who changed them the last time? Where are the so called wrong plugs, do they have them? All may be well, ( and I hope it is) But just what the heck took place here? I mean the car dies and then what? Was it in fact just out of gas?, it seems that is something that no one knows for sure. $250.00 is not alot if the car was towed into the shop, How much did you sell the car for? How come you did not list it here on the board so that we would have first dibs on it? Thanks Tom
Well here is the deal...Hubby talked to the guy and that is what he said...I dont know how it got to the shop. The car had gas in it according to them... I can only relay the information that was given to me...Keep in mind that we never saw the car once it was sold, or after it broke down..So I cant tell you anything about where the plugs are...I had the car for over a year and I know Hubby had changed them not too long ago(I dont know excatly when but I would say about 3 months or so...) We sold her for $2500...as far as not putting her for sale here, I decided to put a sign on her and she sold the first day...
I completely agree with Tom (dang, he's almost cool enough to have a chain steering wheel in his car!)...
Ok old Timmy Boy, as soon as you put one up for sale, I just may buy one from you ( I heard you own most of them this side of the rockies) Tom
Id have told them that it was sold "as is" and that there was no warranty, and proceded to go back to what I was doing and forget about it. Would I feel a little bad about selling something that just grenaded? Yes. Especially knowing that it worked fine when it was sold. Would I help them monetarily? Probalby not. A simple "I'm sorry for your loss and I understand" would be sufficient. But that's just me. I do this stuff on a daily basis and have gotten used to being a hard-a**. It's my job and all too often it carries into my personal life. I sold my old Mustang SVO to a guy, who sold it to someone else...the guy that has it now left me a voice mail about something wrong with it and he had a few questions. Called the guy back & told him to contact the guy that bought it from me originally and that I don't know anything about it other than what I had done to it. BAsically, he wanted me to send him some information on all the mods and some info on the code for the MS-EFI. I sent him the MS EFI stuff (which he had to have to tune it--no other way around it) but he's on his own with the rest of it.
okay, so the girlfriend called my hubby while he was at work and said that her boyfriend is gonna call him in the morning..he wanted to talk...She said that they had the car towed and that cost 150... (so a total of 400 with the work)I will let ya'll know what happens
Wow !! $250.00 for spark plugs, $150.00 for towing ???? I understand that emergency repairs and dealership charges are high but that is down right gouging ! As far as I'm concerned, you shouldn't have to hold someone's hand after selling a used car. "Fried" plugs are definitly something you'd notice during a test drive and I don't think it happens instantaneously whew: big word). Sounds like they're scamming to get some money back. As was suggested before, if you feel responsible, buy it back and re-sell it. Or split the cost with them. But if you do the latter, expect the phone to ring again.
I am sorry to add my pennies this late in the post...I have been watching it from the beginning. It may just be me, but if I bought a car that was 30+ years old and it broke down (know matter when it happend) I would have never called the previous owner to let them know.....thats just part of it!
Maybe they're too embarrassed to admit they ran it out of gas?? I agree the prices for towing and new plugs sound fishy. If your gonna buy a thirty year old car you should be able to change your own plugs, uh, right?
especially on a straight six. offer a trade back for the original sale cost. suggest they look at purchasing something from a dealership on payments. no blame, no harm, no foul.
