there is something i want to know about the engine. I dont know how to explain this. Okay lets say you are facing the engine and on the left side is the battery right so the negative cable is connected to something, i think its an alternator or something. ANy way i dont know the right terms for this so i dont know if yall will be able to understand. Ok you know the belts that spin around the circular disk thingies when the car is on right? well that alternator thingy has one of those circular disks where a belt is suppose to go. The thing is that it doesnt have a belt. Any idea what this thing is? i think its the alternator but im not sure does it even need one of those belt things? I hope yall can understand sorry:huh:

I think your referring to the Alternator pulley.
If there is no belt then the battery will not charge and the engine will not turn over after the battery runs down.

Does the car run at all right now?

Drive it to an Autozone or Advance, they could sell you a belt and help you understand how to get it on right. Probebly get 'er done right in the parking lot. They can check out your battery for free also.

I would look on Ebay or ask on the board in the Parts Wanted section for a Chiltons manual- It will become your Maverick bible.

Good Luck and take pictures if you have a camera!!!

the negative cable should be connected to the engine somewhere,it probably looks like it is going to the thingy (alt)but must be connected to grd ,some one has replaced the cable at one time or another and it was easier to connect it in that area .
the alt will have a pully that spins in the ft and will have "v" groove in it ,as everyone states if the belt is missing then the battery will not charge hope this helps

I could be the smog pump, it sets under the alternator and some times the grounding cable is mounted behind it on the block. It would have a much smaller pulley groove than everything else.

lol, true. However, even in CA, Mavs/Comets didn't have smog pumps till, I think,74. I am positive they were not on 70-73 Mavs/Comets, but after 73 I'm not sure if they started in 74 or 75, as I've never owned one newer than a 73.

wifes 68 cougar did not have one, original 302 cal car. however, my friends 67 ranchero 289 did and my other friends 67 289 cougar did. my friends 70 gto 400 did not. i think it depends on the year and engine.
