This is an old topic, but I guess I never got the answer I was looking for. Does anyone here know one way or the other if I would need longer studs to run 1/4-inch wheel spacers on the rear?...
1/4" longer than what you got now. Seriously though, what wheels are you running? Are the lug nuts open or the solid type?
I would put an original open type lug nut on and see. If there is at least a couple of threads sticking out the end of an open lug not, I wouldn't worry about it. If not, get some studs at least long enough to get 2 or 3 threads sticking out the end of an open lug nut. This takes me back to the days of when I put the new wheels on my dad's '71 Comet and had to get the correct spacers and change the studs. Man that seems like another life time ago now.
The instructions that came with my new wheels said that the lug nut needs to engage at least the thickness of the lug in threads, in other words, 1/2" on our cars. If you've got that much, I'd say you are good. I have been running 5/16" spacers behind my Magnum 500's without longer lug nuts for years, but I never actually measured how much thread was engaging -- I believe it is enough, but I will measure next time I'm swapping wheels around and let you know. I have not found very many different lenghts of replacement lugs, so it could be difficult to get exactly the length you need -- which is important if you are running close-end lug nuts like I am and you probably are.
are you using the stock type rims. my weld wheels take a longer stud to make it all the way through the wheel itself.
if you take it to the track, there must be at least the diamter of the stud extending that much past the lug nut if you add thickness to the rim you must ALWAYS get longer studs, or you run the risk of snapping the studs or not having a tight enough lug nut...
the stud must go into the lug nut at least the diameter if the stud. it dosen't have to go all the way through.
I had spacers on mine for years when I had cragar SS rims on the back. They were 1/4 inch spacers and I never changed the studs on the two mavericks I had them on. Dan
i disagree. i'm reading right out of the nhra rulebook. i doubt they would put it in like that if it wasn't safe.
