Hello, I shipped an NOS Maverick "boomerang" moulding (the chromed pot metal piece in the corner of the rear quarter) overseas about three years ago to get some prices on reproducing them. It went from manufacturer to manufacturer and all of them said it couldn't be done for a reasonable amount of money (they sited the pot metal as being too thin). Well, to make a long, long story short...I received a call today from a supplier who said it could definitely be done in chromed plastic. He wasn't sure about pricing but thought they would have to retail at between $120 and $140. I'm fairly new to reproducing parts and wanted to know if there is any interest in the "Maverick Circle" for these parts. I know the "purists" won't want them but if there is enough interest from the rest of you guys, I'll see what the pricing comes in at exactly and take it to the next step. Let me know what you think. Please be honest with your responses as this is not a cheap endeavor to undertake and I'm looking at reproducing other Maverick/Comet parts if all goes well. Thank you. Ed
I'll be honest with you. A few years back I had both of my boomerangs rechromed for $120. I am aware that the price of re-chroming has gone up a bit since then, but I really don't think too many folks will want to pay up to $140 for chrome plated plastic when they can have thier metal ones re-chromed for close to the same price. I do commend you for at least trying to have this hard to come by part reproduced. I just think that most folks would rather have metal boomerangs over plastic ones. That's just my . Lets see how the others feel about the idea.
I would have metal ones replated before paying that much for plastic. Dosen't seem like plastic ones would last nearly as long.
Thanks for trying to help! We need more folks like you looking out for us lowly Mav guys, however I don't think you are there yet. That kind of money for plastic is very excessive. I don't think repop Stang boomerangs in chromed metal are that much. Dave
Is this price for a pair??? If so, it might go over okay if the quality is good but I seriously doubt there would be many takers if it's just for one. There aren't that many Maverick purists so being plastic might not be that big of a deal. Most Mavericks are modified to a certain extent anyway. I personally wouldn't have a problem paying $120 for a pair of high quality plastic ones if I was building a nice car.
I see this has raised some interest on the forum here. After I posted the thread, I started wondering the same thing that you guys are questioning. It did seem kind of high to me too. I'll have to call tomorrow and see if I can get some more info. on the pricing. He told me earlier today that the retail would have to be $60-$70. I assumed that was a piece but I just don't know. That would seem to be a much better price if they were $60-$70 a pair. I'll post a new reply as soon as I get the update. Thanks for the interest and your utmost honesty. It is truly appreciated. Ed
Would they be of high enough quality to withstand wind, snow, sleet and hail? How about temperature extremes and UV rays. I have a buddy that smashed up the front bumper of his Dakota and it turned out the entire thing was chrome plated plastic - you would think it was metal if you looked at it and it is tough enough to be put on the front end of a truck. If they are of that high of a quality the would be worth up to $100 a pair ... Basically ... if they are constructed to the quality of an OEM automotive part I say go for it ...
I think that they would be worth about $25-$30 each, however did you send a set or just one side? I tried this before in Hong Hong, and they just laughed seems you need a big orderTom
If they are of high quality as Dan said then I think 60.00 is a fair price considering that a NOS pair sold for over 200.00 not to long ago..at the cost of rechroming going up, that may not be a good alternative in the future either.. Plastic may be all that is affordable..jm RON
Keep in mind that if Ford produced the Maverick today ... the boomerangs would probably be plastic ...
