60 bucks a pair would definately work. Dan, if ford made the mav today it probably wouldnt have chrome there
I would say that there was a 99.9% chance of that! Hardly anything is metal on new cars anymore...especially moldings.
now that you mention it though, the wifes subaru has a chrome plated plastic piecs around the grill and it swirls pretty easy. the guy who rearended my highboy with his new dodge ram HAD a mostly chromed plastic grill.
I think plastic boomerangs would be a great idea. Plastic does not swell up and "pit" like the pot metal does when exposed to the "elements" after a long period of time. Of course the thickness of the plastic and type are what is going to make it last if it takes a direct hit from flying road debris. My son has a chrome plated plastic grille in his C^&#* and it is doing well after 27 years of pushing around wind on the front of the car. I say go for it. Especially if the prices aare around a more reasonable $30-$70 a pair.
Lets see a set then well make a opinion. The last set I had rechromed a month ago cost me $100 for the pair.
I couldn't get a hold of the manufacturer yesterday, but I did speak with a friend of mine who is a big Guru in the world of Reproduction Pontiac parts (he basically started that whole business). He said that they have reproduced 6 or 7 things in plastic in the past few years that were originally pot metal. He said the quality of the new chromed plastic is 100% top notch and that the wear factor is not an issue. To quote "they'll outlast your Maverick for sure!" He was pretty sure they would have to be about $50-$60 each based on his experience. (I'm waiting to talk to the manufacturer overseas directly to find out a more accurate price). The last part that he had reproduced was a 69 GTO Taillight Bezel. He said the thing is huge and really difficult to reproduce (impossible in pot metal). He couldn't believe the quality when he got them in. At the first show he took them to, people were almost hitting themselves in the face with them because they expected them to be real heavy like the originals. People were absolutely amazed. As for $200 a pair for NOS boomerangs, I'll buy them all-day, every day for that price (if anyone has any sets, just let me know and I'll send da cash pronto!!!). Well, that's all I have for now. I probably won't be able to call next week as I'll be busy packing for Spring Carlisle. I'll keep everyone updated when I get back. Thanks. Ed PS: I know that rechroming is about the same price but I also know that unless you start with a basically pit-free core, even the best chrome platers can't figure out a way to stop the pits from coming back through. I know several people myself who have done multiple parts with Paul's and the pitting is coming right back through the chrome a couple of years later (and they're suppose to be the best in the business). I hope your luck with replating is much better than theirs!
I paid $15.75 for the last NOS boomerang I bought ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34204&item=4608053057
