My Maverick is a 1975 4-door with an inline 6 cylinder engine. The paint and interior (what's left of it) are original. Believe it or not, I've spent about 3 years looking for a Maverick and ended up buying this one from a guy in Amarillo. He'd bought it for a hobby car and had to sell off some of his hobby cars to appease the wife. I'm a married woman with 5 kids. I am working on a dual-degree in Anthropology and American History, after which I will transfer to another college to get a Masters in Native American History. I am Native American, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation. My grandfather and Dad taught me about cars. As early as I can remember I have been handing tools over to whoever was working on the farm truck or John Deere. We had little money so we had to keep what we had running, and that means taking care of it. My first husband was also a mechanic and we enjoyed restoring a Camaro together (I'm not a Chevy fan, but it was his dream car.) I was given my first Maverick by my grandparents. It was a 73 4 door with a rebuilt 302, pea soup green with matching interior. I LOVED this car. I had it from the time I was 15 til I was 19 at which time it was stolen, probably for the wheels and stereo. I've had my "new" baby a month. I've ripped out the airconditioner because I'll never use it and it takes up too much space. I blew out the fuel lines and cleaned and resealed the gas tank because of the rust and dirt in it. Replaced the alternator and am going to have to replace the starter or the soleniod this week, gotta figure that out. Carb will need to be rebuilt soon, the choke sticks occasionally. It has a bad shimmy when I go over about 45 mph, pretty sure that's just the alignment, and I need to redo the brakes because there's a caliper on the left that's sticking. I have tomorrow off work and I just got paid last Friday, so you can guess what I'm doing all day! Hope I didn't ramble too much. Nice to meet everyone. If you have any tips, suggestions, corrections, advice or anything feel free to write back. I'm open to any help I can get. Grandpa and Dad aren't able to get under cars like they used to and I'm 5' tall so I have to stand on a cinder block to reach some stuff but I'll get her pretty again!
Tiki, to the board. I have been a member for 1 year now. And all I can say is WOW. The people on this board really know about Mavericks. Best board I've seen and been a member of.
Welcome abroad. Sounds like you have a deep passion for your Maverick. Best of luck with it. As far as the shimmy goes, are you sure it isn't a tie-rod end r other suspension part going out on you? Mis-alignment does not usually cause a shimmy (I believe). I'd guess it's either a bushing going out in the suspension, or the tires need balancing (or both). Anyway, welcome to the board. 'Looking forward to your progress posts.
P.S in highschool the first car I ever bought ( back in 1980 was '75 4 door Mav dark blue vinyl over white with bue cloth interior, miss that car to this day.
