The steering on my comet has about 3 inches of play. I'm thinking its the manual steering box. Can these be tightened or repaired? I found one at the auto store but its about 250$. Any advice on this?

There was a big steering thread a while back. One thing you might try is making sure the steering gear box has a sufficient amount of gear oil in it...now in my case 90W gear oil didnt stay in, so some recommended axle grease seems to have solved the play in my wheel.

Your steering gear is adjustable. 'Takes about 5 minutes. Tightening it even a little bit makes a huge difference in the amount of "play". I would addust the box first, see how much difference it made, then check the front-end to make sure everything is tight. A bad idler arm or idler arm bushing can cause slop in the steering as well...

Also, when you're searching, see if you can find the thread about putting a zerk fitting in the gear box lid. Makes greasing it a breeze !!

Stupid question time; were do I put the gear oil in at ? Is there a plug or do I need to take the top plate off ?

    Thanks

dont have a pic to send you (search a previous post), but if memory serves, it's just the center screw - just back it out and viola: you now have a hole to pour stuff in.
