Changed the oil, filter and air cleaner today on both the mav. and comet. The maverick gets terrible gas mileage it seems to run great but idles a little rough. I rebuilt the carb about 6 months ago. When I changed the air filter it smelled really strong with gas. I believe I need to change the carb. before I do anything else. What do you guys think. I checked Auto Zone they have a Carter for 65.00. It is a model yf6-751. Has anybody used one of these and how good are they. I would be intrested if any one has one that would be as good as this one. Dean
Dean, it sounds as if you might have a float problem. How do your plugs look? A very well respected carb builder here is cutting a relief in the base of the carb for atomazation with the new ethynol blended fuels. It sure has helped on my older cars. Good post and anxious to see replies. Dan
All right I'm a little mythd. All the plugs are burning to a good golden brown. The only moisture I see is some on the threads from I belive a gasket problem. I guess I need to go back and retime???
Well I just retimed. It was out of time. It was to about 14 on the timing mark. I brought it back to a little above TDC and it seems to run a lot better. I will check the gas mileage again and see where I am at. Question ???? With it out of time that much would it have affected ths gas mileage that much. Dean
Timing Uhhh......my guess would be yes Beavis. J/K. I think that is why they call it TIMING. Good timing or bad timing. I hope you get it running right. Check my picture gallery and you will find the timing specs for your engine. It is a scanned image. http://mmb.maverick.to/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=1647&original=1
What does the carburetor bowl look like? Is it clean? if so, take the fuel filter off the carb and see if it's dirty. I dought if you need a new carb. I just went through a gas tank that had what looked like sand in it. But now, 250cid just runnnnnnnssssssssss. Ken
Hey Ken, I rebuilt the carb about 6 months ago and replaced the gaskets and float. I retimed this afternoon and seems to run better I think I am going to leave it alone and see what kind of gas mileage I get and go from there. I agree that the way it is running and hopefully get better gas mileage that the carb is ok. When I bought my 74 comet I had to replace the filter about 4 times and also remove the tank about 3 times to clean before I finally got it all cleaned out. It had set for about 5 years. Thanks for your help. Dean
Dean, didn't mean it (Beavis) in a bad way. Just tryin to make ya laugh. I thought maybe the chart from the manual would help you get it a little closer to the required timing instead of "a little aboveTDC". Just giving you a place to start from, thats all. I know that I have a car likes a couple more degrees than what is shown in the book though. Hell, and all of this is coming from a guy (me) that has no idea what his 302 is set at because he cannot find a timing tab for a '74 302.
getting bad gas usuage... have you played with the two (or one depending on carb) screws that adjust the air-fuel ratio at all? i need to do this on mine as its running really really really rich rite now
hehh hehh, yeah, hehh hehh. roy, if you can find someone who will let you look at their 302 and do some measuring, you could just paint a line on the front of the engine block where it should be for now. then you can put an aftermarket one wherever it is visible over the balancer and paint new lines on the balancer to line it up for that mark. good luck.
