Hey, I just insatalled a b&m shift improver kit and now it won't upshift. In D it feels like it pulls alot harder than before, but it won't shift outta 1st geat and if I move the gear selector down to 2 it shifts hard but then seems to be draging on the engine, then put it back in D and it goes back to fist gear. One thing I was unsure about is on figure 9 of the instructions, it says "discard this check ball", and "install 7/32 ball here", well I used the "discard this check ball" ball and installed it where it says "install 7/32 check ball here", as it is 7/32 and there are no other balls..
Sorry, dont know a thing about automatics but the B&M kit instructions should have a tech line that you can call. I used them when I did mine and they were very friendly and helpful.
Ugh! B&M tech line isnt open on weekends and I'om only home on weekends . The problem is that drive isn't shifting right, I think. Drive is only using 1st gear and not shifting. I can shift it manually into 2 and it works but when putting it back into D it goes back into 1st gear. I disconnected the kickdown rod, to make sure it wasn't binding up, so.. I don't think that was a problem. Maybe someone who has installed this kit can just tell me what had to be changed, replaced, or removed just to make sure I put it together correct. thanks, Jon
Does anybody remember moving a plastic ball from one location to another in the transfer plate? I think thats what the crappy instructions are trying to tell me.
Are you sure you put the shifter back on the big plunger valve correctly? These problems sound pretty severe for a wrong-sized or misplaced ball.
I'm pretty sure its in the right place. The shifter was in park and the plunger's "notch" nearest its end is where the shifter thing went. Is that correct? I just took it all apart and inspected everything and went through the instructions all again and put it back in and its still dosnt work. Park, reverse, neutral, and 1 all seem to work. 2 works as 2nd gear but dosn't start out in 1st. Drive starts out in 1st and will not shift.
You may wanna take a peek at the vacuum hose that goes to the modulator valve just to make sure you didn't accidentally unplug it. That can cause similar problems. The problem is most likely in the v/b but this is something you can check without tearing back into it so it's worth a look.
Checked that. Vacuum hose is still there, and it is kinda up outta the way so I don't think i could have damaged it easily.
Modulator vaccum hose is leak free. Is it possible to get the kick down rod lever in the wrong place when reinstalling the valve body? Would that cause it not to shift?
It's been a little while since I've put a v/b back in one but I do remember having to be very careful to get the lever and the piston in just the right place. I think you should be able to shift the tranny by hand and feel if it goes in all the gears and the kick down lever should feel spring loaded. I think if something was in wrong you would be able to feel it by hand when you go through the motions. There are some guys on here that are very knowledgeable about c4's. You might do a search and read the threads concerning c4's and then you can pm the experts. If you have trouble finding them, let me know and I'll help you do the search.
I'm pretty sure i got the shifter and that big plunger valve aligned correctly, I could see it when I was putting it in. The shifter was in park and went into the last notch in the plunger. I had to move the kick down rod around to get the valve body to set flat, and it does feel spring loaded but thats because of the spring on the carb. Yeah, I've searched and searched for answers but cannot really find what I'm looking for Thanks, I appreciate all the help I get.
Johnny, check out these threads. They aren't going to solve your problem but there are some tranny experts in them that should be able to help: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=23169&highlight=transmission send a pm to mavman on this one http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=3135&highlight=transmission send a pm to OldGuy, Courier, and GreaseMonkey All 4 of the above guys seem to know an awfully lot about c4's if you read through those 2 threads. I believe at least one of them should be able to help you. I believe if they had seen this thread already, they would have jumped in to try to help. Hope that helps...good luck.
Old Guy is the man to talk to. When I was working on my trans a while back, no one else was even in the ball park. He jumped in and hit the nail on the head with his first post. That guy knows a thing or 2 about C4 transmissions.
Well I just put in a new modulator and replaced its vacuum hoses and made sure there were no leaks and it still dosn't shift..
Well a couple weeks ago I put the stock seperator plate back in and did the stage 1 upgrade as on the burly4x4 website and it all worked fine.. so I know I was putting the valvebody and shifter things back in correctly. I showed the kit to the local transmission shop and he said that I need a seperator plate gasket, however the kit instructions say not to use a gasket. Would it hurt to use the gasket? I noticed the stock plate and the b&m plate have a hole or two in different locations.. Is that right? or did I get a wrong plate?
