Hey guys, whoever did the first half-ass rebuild on this engine I am building, left out what the Chilton's manual refers to as a "front oil slinger". It looks like a large flat washer with a notch in it to fit over the crank woodruf key, and its purpose is to deflect oil away from the front seal. Anyway, none of the local auto parts stores have it. Does anyone know where I can get one?....
I see them eBay all the time ... although expensive. I found one at a local Ford dealer for $4 ... they are a dealer only item. They also sling oil onto the fuel pump ecentric to keep it lubricated ... maybe somebody with a parts engine can help you out ...
I would think your local Ford Dealership Parts Department would have them. There's also http://www.dscmotorsport.com/asp/products/content_crankshafts.asp?SubCat=84&GroupID=3 Tough one to find on the auto parts 'online' stores. Can you believe Ebay doesn't even have one (for the 302)? Good luck. edit: I see we posted at the same time D. I couldn't find one on ebay.
Here is the last one that ended .... $40! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-...016QQitemZ260027016655QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Sometime in the mid to late 70s Ford omitted them from the engines(at least on the 302s). I guess they felt it wasn't necessary or they could save a little money by not using them. I would think that if the engines needed them, they would have put them on. If every one leaked under warranty, they would stand to lose a lot more having to fix the leaks.
I always leave them out of all my engines, the chain will throw enough oil "everywhere" inside the cover. As far as the cover seal goes, if it is new and installed correctly with a good seal surface on the balancer, should be no problem without it.
A lot of guys leave them out. There should be a bunch in members garages from here alone. It's really not a big deal. I can't believe someone would pay $40 for one.
Hey guys, whoever did the first half-ass rebuild on this engine I am building, So are you saying your doing the second?
It depends on which timing cover you have to determine if you you need the slinger or not. The covers with the small ledge inside above the front seal do not get a slinger, covers that are flat inside should have the slinger. The two (ledge and slinger) should never be used together. Supposedly the seal materials used nowadays are so much better that it usually doesn't hurt to run without.
Yeah, Tom. I'm not sure why you're asking, but Someone had gone through this engine before I got it. It came out of a '68 Mustang. I guarantee it is being built right this time...
Okay guys, I figured out what the deal is, and I feel kind'a bad now for wasting your time about it in the first place. As it turns out, my timing cover has the "ledge", so I couldn't use the oil slinger anyway. For some reason, I didn't notice it before, but it's there. It's a '77 model (why, I don't know). Again, I really appreciate all of the helpful replies you offered...
