I had a T289 on my old Mustang when I bought it. It worked nice. Good response, pulled fairly well from idle to about 6000 and it was done. MILD 306, about .512" lift hydraulic roller, 10:1 compression, 5 speed & 3.73's, iron heads. I had a regular RPM laying around & tried it. Man what a difference! Bottom end was much improved, response was improved, and the top end (up to about 6500) was vastly improved. Later I tried a victor Jr. Lazy bottom end & mid range but great from 4500-up. This car RARELY spend any time above 3000 RPM (street car) so I didn't need the Victor Jr. I'd at least go with an RPM regular style (non air gap). You will notice a difference over the T289, and yes, the one I had was ported pretty good. BTW, with a dual plane you can get away with more carb than normal; you can easily put a 750 or larger on there and not lose anything. I ran a 750 on mine, but put the 600 Edelbrock back on it later on as the 750 went on the race car. And to put an end to the big carb arguement....What happens when you're motoring around at 1500 RPM, and you punch it? It only needs....what....120-some CFM? Then a 600 is too big. Hell, even a stock 2bbl is too big. Many times putting a larger carb on will do nothing for the low end, but pick up on the top end, especially with dual plane manifolds. Mine's only 414 cu. inch; yet I run 1280 CFM. Maybe I should put a 830 on it?? I don't think so! An 830 Annular booster HOlley (home built) was MUCH more responsive in all RPM ranges (from 1500-7000) on my old '74 Maverick 306 street car than the 600 Edelbrock ever was. Used less fuel too....but again, that carb ended up on the race car and I went to a blow-through 600 double pumper on the Maverick (turbo). At one time I ran a 1050 (#9375) dominator on a mild 302 in my '84 Mustang. Great responsiveness. Could have easily driven it on the street that way, but why? Carb wouldn't fit under the hood. Ended up putting a 780 Holley on it, untouched, and running the same ET but 1 less MPH...but it's deadly consistent.
Well its my uncle car, but we both work on each other cars so i consider it to be mine also.He just bought a house so its gonna be in primer for a while until he saves up for the painjob.My mav will be in black primer in the next couple of days
well looks like I wont be getting those world windsor junior heads... mostly because ive managed to get edelbrock performer RPM heads for the same price Package should be good for 330 - 340hp I figure now.
i run a 600 cfm setup with a performer 289 intake... it falls on its face at 5300 as it is supposed to do.... i too have a 2500 stall and 2.79 gears and will be going to a 3.55 gears... no traction.. heheh.. i am there as well.. my mav runs 14.4 at 95 and weghs 2880 with driver you have better headsthan meand are already better in your setup... i would think you could use a 3.8 gear ratio instead... but everyone has already put all te advice i would recommend
You had the exact opposite experience that I did. I had/have always used a T289. My co-workers at the speed shop, back in 93, razzed me all the time that I needed to get 'modern' and go with the 'new' Edelbrock intake that promised more power all over than my single plane intake. At the time all the car mags were on their anti-single plane kick too. So all these guys believed every word Hot Rod and Edelbrock fed them. I gave in to peer pressure and bought a brand new RPM when they first came out. Worst thing I ever did. I gained no appreciable bottom end, lost mid-range, and the top was dismal with the RPM. Throttle response was lazy and got worse as the rpms increased. I changed nothing. I then supertuned the carb all over to try and get it back, no results. I then gained a bit back with a 2" open spacer! Of course I couldn't run an air cleaner, not to mention I still was not up to the performance of my unported T289. I put up with it for maybe a month, and then put the T289 back on. I dumped the RPM on the first sucker that came along to get my dough back. Luckily I had a good employee discount to get the thing. I sold it for almost what I had in it and the guy thought he was getting a smokin deal. I did nothing again, but put the T289 back on, and was grinning ear to ear. Throttle response and power to 6700 rpm was back just as before. No joke, the RPM felt like it was towing a trailer after 4k and choking at 5500. Non-ported intake... 306 @ 10.4:1 289 heads 1.94/1.60 valves 228/235 @ .050" Sig Erson cam Hooker 6901s 750 DP Toploader 3.00 then 4.11 gears... No traction whatsoever. 75 Mav 8.20/85 mph/2.80 sixty ft---1/8 mile IIRC, was long time ago...
Mine falls on it's face at a little over 5000, but that is due to the cam, not the intake. I have the performer plus cam, good to 5000 rpm, as advertised. Once I hit 5200 or so, it starts to slowly accelerate, then won't go much over 5500-5700 at all. Never pushed it any harder than that...
I'll be planning on taking mine out to 6000rpm with my heads/cam package, it should run out of legs I approximate at about 5800rpm. On a side issue, does anyone have any specs on the T289? Runner length? Runner Diameter? Flow ratings?
I have seen a few fast 302`s that were running T 289 intakes. I bought a 302 from a buddy`s 65 Mustang race car (was in my Maverick for a while ) 306, 12.5 to 1 TRW`s with ported `65 289 heads (1.94/1.60 valves) Yeilded 12.8 to 1 compression. Comp Solid Flat tappet cam .576/.570 255/266 dur. at .050 with 106 ls. Topped with a T289 intake (port matched only) and a Holley 750dp . C-4 with a 4,800 converter. 5.14 gears with 30x10" slicks , 2,800lb with driver. NO Nitrous best et = 11.47 @ 114.6 mph. but ran consistant 11.70`s. Shifted at 6,500 went thru the traps at 7,200 rpm. Also have a buddy who had a Fairmont with the exact same set up as above but with `69 `351w heads and 4.30 gears...car went 10.80`s on a 150 shot of Nitrous.
Hi guys, thought you might be interested in an update, that I finally got my heads. Edelbrock Performer RPM's with 2.02 intake valves. Should get my little car quite motivated once its all together.
Hey listen i have a 460 in my mav theres always room you just need a little imagination.....i was runnig a 750 dubble pumper on my 302 with a big cam 3000 stall and 4.11 gears on a mainly street driven mav (which now has the 460 in it)it had great throttle response and made power all the way through 6800 rpm..i did have the jets downsized...hey mate i am an aussie living over here in NY USA and i am a westie how are the Panthers doing...anyway good luck you have a nice ride and if you need any parts feel free to drop me a line at scoopbj@aol.com and i will try and help you Barry
Cheers Baz. I used to live in the US/Canada as well, but came back in to AU in 98. Panthers started out OK in the 06 season in the first two rounds with wins, but then started to lose the plot. Ended up 10 wins 14 losses, ended up 12th on the ladder come finals. PS: BTW thats one effing big scoop.
Looks like i will be making a trip back in March 07 for the bros wedding it will be in coffs harbour was thinking of looking for a monaro or torana while i am over there to bring back with me .......and theres always next year for the panthers...
