Anyone know if the 79 F-150's came with a 9" rear end. I talked to a guy and he says he has one and he'll let it go for $40! I don't even know if it'll fit and what is needed to shorten them:huh: . I haven't the faintest clue...I searched but didn't find too much info. Any input?

Yes it would be a 9". It would be to wide for a Maverick. The housing can be cut and narrowed and will require the axles to be cut down and resplined or new aftermarket axles. I am not a big fan of the cut and respline.
Check it to see if it is a Traction Lok might be a steal just for the center section.

The trucks use a 5 on 5" bolt pattern also, but you could easily narrow it and use stock 28 spline 8" Maverick axles for the correct fit. Well worth $40 bucks. The chunk is worth way more than that. I think all 1/2 ton trucks used the 9" from 1959 untill about 1990? My 84 has one, sons 68 and 72 does also. I plan on narrowing the one from the 72 that way myself one day later on....

Being a P/U truck especially if it is a 4x4 it could have 31 spline axles in it.

Even if the spline count is wrong, it would be real easy to change the spider gears or put in a mini spool with the correct splines while the rear is apart for narrowing....

IMO its alot of work when you can get a 9 inch that will bolt right in

all your doing is cutting out a section of the tubes , and axles are getting cut and they spline them where they cut it

Be careful, some of the light, light duty pickups had an inspection plate type rear in '79(Spicer?).Oh and Ford truck pattern is 5 on 5.5,except some of the early '80s 2wd f100s that had the ford car 5 on 4.5 pattern.
