Dose anybody know some common ford problems that I can check on my gas gauge to get it going again? man this is annoying....(gas is $2.35 a gallon I got X gallons time figure 10 MPG so I will; have to fill up at.......) like I said...annoying lol.:16suspect
Most likely it will be the sending unit inside the gas tank. You can test it by unplugging the wire from the unit on the side of the gas tank and grounding the wire directly to the body with the key on. It will be easier if you have someone watching the guage while you do this. If the guage moves upward, the sending unit is bad. Good luck and let us know what you find.
You can try e-bay...I see them on there all the time, but not sure if they fit that 75-77 that Hawko is talking about
If you ground the wire/wires on the sender and it still will not work, it is probably the voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster. Over time I have seen the thin copper strip loose contact with the two halves of the metal body of the regulator that it is sandwiched between. I have fixed mine by squeezing/crimping the metal tighter against the copper strip.
that was the problem when mine didnt work had to drill some holes in the back of the instrument cluster and use fishing line to keep the plug- in tight now i have lights and gauge
On three of my cars, the actual gas gauge inside the cluster itself was bad. My first step in figgureing out problems with gas gauges is to disconnect the wire back at the fuel sending unit and short it with a paper clip or something. If the gas gauges pegs to full with the key on, then it's the sending unit. If not, then verify you have power in the circuit, then start up at the cluster. Replace the regulator first, then the gas gauge in the cluster.
