it looks like i might be getting a 72 !!UPDATE!!!!! maverick. four door 302 v-8 and i think automatic. Garage kept just under 50000 original one owner miles. paint looks good, but really aint looked it over that good.. It is a distant family member that has it and she is getting up in age and has decided to sell the car. I told her i would give her 600 dollars for it, or it could be less. Any way i am looking for info! I havent driven it yet, so i am kinda in the dark right now. But i have a feeling it is goin to be in pretty good shape.. So what do i need to look for? I figured out it has drum brakes all the way around, and points ignition. How tough are these trannies? I read it proably is a c-4? How arwe the motors from this era? What kinda gas mileage do these get? Basically i want to learn all i can about these old cars, good points and things to look for or interesting facts. If it starts and moves i will proably buy it, mainly for its uniqness and cool factor driving it around town. So what can ya tell me??? If i buy it i am proably gonna use this forum alot... Thanks!! later chris
to the board cool 72 sounds good price aint bad if it aint bad your goin to want to check the cowl , take a bottle of water , and pour in the cowl vent , if you see water goin to the floor board you have a rust problem... check the trunk area , rear quarters rot all the time... check floor boards for a flintstone car... C4s are awesome auto trans im sure ive missed something but theres an idea Eddie
sounds like great deal. look through the gallery at pics of members cars and you will see some nice 4 dr cars. welcome to the board. by the way, where are you from?
:Handshake you will have to overlook Don, he is retired and getting on up in age. i am sure he ment... "where you at"? ...Dons' friend Frank...
It will have points ignition. First thing I would do is either install a Pertronix, or Duraspark II ignition. There is no good reason to waste your time with points ignition in this day and age. Don't expect awesome gas mileage. High teen's to low 20's is about what it will probably get. Like anything else, it depends on how much you can keep your foot out of it. The engine and transmission should be about bullet proof if you keep up with the maintenance and check the fluids regularly. $600 is an awesome deal on any clean V8 Maverick IMO.
sounds good to me... 600 is a great price for a car around 50k miles. these cars are easier to work on than anything you could buy these days. not much in wiring, and mecahincally they hold up pretty good. since its a factory 302, chances are the engine might need to freshened up to get any power out of it, and these engines fix up easily and pretty cheap. if the car has sat any length of time do the following: just do a once over. i would dump the gas tank, and flush the lines, chances are its gummed up. before you start it, that way it doesnt suck up bad gas into the carb. the carb is probably bone dry. everything will need to be greased up, and tires will probably be flat bottomed change the oil, check plugs, etc. the point might need to be checked/gapped. etc good luck and welcome aboard any questions you might have are probably already answered on here somewhere. type in your question and search.
Welcome. If the car is anywhere near decent, I would jump on it. Where are you? Hopefully somewhere easy on the rust! If it's rust free, you have a real gem for 600 bux. If you are at all mechanically inclined, hang around the board and you will learn to put disc brakes on her and tune your engine for mileage and/or performance. Jamie is dead on about the points though. As soon as you get her home, put a mid-70s Ford solid state ignition in it. It's a really good system and many aftermarket systems are based on the same design. If you don't have the wrench skills to do this mod (it's intermediate level), then just do the other that Jamie suggests and put a Pertronix in place of the points (beginner level). Good luck Dave Btw: If you decide not to get the car, be kind and come back to the board and give a member local to you a chance to rescue it!
well i am going to look at it again saturday, and if the body frame is solid, and will run and drive, i will proably buy it. I am hoping since it has lived in a garage all its life the rust will be minimal. And it seems like these cars are real easy to work on. I might buy it and drive and it be a perfect car or i might buy it and it be a money pit. That is a gamble i am just gonna have to take if i buy it. But i have a feeling i will buy it cause it seems like this is a diamond in the rough.. So i will kepp you all informed if i buy it or not.. later!! chris
Very easy! Even easier with the members here helping! This really is a great bunch of guys (and gals) Dave
another member of the 4 door club. YAAAAHOOOOO!!!!! if the body is good grab that up. the engine alone is almost worth the $600 price.
