check your pcv valve and make sure it is not sticking too. If the engine is building pressure in the crank case it will push oil round your rings and seals and cause smoke too.

my first mav was a 70 w 6cyls i got from my dad's admin in 76. i had to drop 2 clutches and 2 sets of rings iin it in the 5 years i had it. it's a no engine pull job, just drop the oil pan an take off the heads.
the pistons will come right out of the top ( on the 6, i can't comment on the 289 or higher v-8). it took me both saturday and sunday the 2nd time to do it but i drove it to school on monday.
i also had to have the valves redone at my local machine shop on the first rebuild. the shock mounts in the rear that i had to remanufacture are another story (chasing cows at 30 to 50 mph through the pasture is not what the mav was designed for.) good luck,
    matt

This is a very similar sounding problem to what I had. Mine turned out to be a piece of my #8 cylinder missing. I could actually see the top of the ring, as it was the edge of the top face of the piston!!!
