I have a maverick 73 and i want to put the powerful and small 351 cleveland on it, how can I make it? remember 351 cleveland smaller than 429 but has the same displacement, i heard about a maverick 428 OHC but i think 351 cleveland will fit easier and should do the job
You will find all the info you need by doing a search on this site. You `ll need to also cut your shock towers to make the swap. Do a search for that and you`ll get lots of pictures and explanations of how its done.
351c and 429 having the same displacement...Is that the "new math" I've been hearing about? And since when does a 428 have overhead cams?...
First things first. 1. Buy a good book on Ford Engines. 2.. would it be better cut, hammer, and weld to make the engine fit, or buy a mustang II frame kit? 3.. does anybody make headers for your swap.? 4.. how much H/P do you want or need.? You will need to build up the rest of the car... trans, rear end, springs, shocks and bigger brakes. 5.. IS THIS YOUR FIRST PROJECT? Just because it can be done, dosn"t mean you should do it. I feel you should get a crate 302, 331, or 347 sbf. Each of these engines would fit, with headers, no sweat! It depends on your buget. You will need a buget before you start. You could use a 5-speed or c-4, or a 4-speed and keep your 8" rear and have money left over. I can't belive how many projects I have seen in 30 years of hot rodding that never left the garage under their own power. I had a 1972 camaro and I just ran out of money. Then sold it for 1/2 the money I had invested in it. Tell us what you want your car to do...autocross, drag race, rally or just a fun car. Off the top of my head you are looking at about $15,000.00 to swap in the big 351c and about $7,000.00 for the 347 sbf. Good ride Tony
the 351 and 429 do not have the same displacement. They are completely different engines and neither will fit in a Maverick or Comet without removing the shock towers and replacing the front suspension. This is a very advanced swap and it is not for the novice. The 427 Ford had an overhead cam but the engine is so wide that it will only fit in the larger Ford engine compartments. Even though the 428 is the same basic block as the 427 it was never fitted with the over-head cams that the 427 had. You would have to use the 427 o/head cam block and the 428 internal parts with the 427 type pistons. While you could make a "428 overhead cam" engine it would not be practical. The best swap for the 70's Maverick and Comets is the stroker 302's or if you have the ability to shave the shock towers then you can put in the 351W. There are stroker kits that will give you 427 cu" with a 351W block. You could install this combination but it is a lot of very exacting work to get it to fit in the small engine compartment of the Maverick and Comets.
a clevland CAN AND WILL fit in a Mav...swap headers are even made for C ask ratio411 it WILL FIT and the 427 OHC is on the price when your on a budget....C and W are both great...only problem with W is headers, so far far crites has been the big ticket for headers...lord knows the Hookers i have were easy it fit go with a 302 stroker cheap , easy and can be fast! no comment of "same cubes"
Remove suspension? Heck, I didn't even shave the towers! These are the swap headers for a 351c (with shock towers intact) in a Maverick/Comet. These are from Tubular, but there are others...
I`ve seen several Mavericks with clevelands ,and was gathering parts to put one in my car at one time but changed ny mind and decided to go 408w. Here is a Maverick I saw at the track with stock front suspension,Cleveland, and Tubular automotive headers.
sorry about saying 351c and 427 have same displacement I got wrong info obviously and about the price of the engine dont worry, I have a friend selling engines and he is selling a 351C to me in $400... YES 400 dollars, isn't that cool?(it is in fine condition) and about the mods i want to know what do i need to do for placing it in there... what i want to do with my car is to show all the people here in mexico that muscle cars are better than the new ones because here everyone wants new cars and they dont believe me that muscles are even faster than many of the new cars thx for all your help
Is the engine a Cleveland or "M" engine. The "M" engine has a 10.5" deck height compared to the Cleveland's 9.2" deck height. that Makes the "M" series engines over two inches wider and more than an inch higher than the windsor. What year is the engine?
it is a 351 cleveland please tell me how to do it and if you have some pictures showing radiator is not connected to intake of a 351 cleveland please take it here also i think might be usefull to see that the car is a maverick to really check about if I can really place it there, I've been looking in the web and many of the parts of the cleveland are even smaller than windsor's hehe taht makes me feel closer to the objective, i dont have even a year with my car and im starting with all these engine stuff thx for all your answers
I have one in mine and it fits fine. Driver side shock tower was modified with a small 3" divit so that one of the header tubes fit nicer.
